General Assembly President arrives in Yemen on second leg of Middle East tour

7 April 2010 – The President of the General Assembly has begun the second leg of a 15-day, four-nation trip to the Middle East after earlier holding talks with top Syrian officials that focused on the role of the United Nations in the region.

Dr. Treki today arrived in Yemen for several days of talks with senior officials in that country’s Government. He will then travel to Kuwait and Bahrain before wrapping up his trip next Wednesday.

On Monday, he visited Damascus for discussions with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that covered the role of the UN in the Middle East and the need for reconciliation among the Palestinians.

Dr. Treki invited Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem to attend the upcoming thematic debate on the Middle East. Mr. Muallem commended Dr. Treki for his role in the revitalization of the General Assembly and reiterated the position of the League of Arab States on the expansion of the Security Council.
