Landmark Event at ESCWA: Arab International Forum on Rehabilitation and Development of the Occupied Palestinian Territory
Beirut, 2 June 2004 (United Nations Information Service)--Palestinian Minister of Planning Nabil Kassis, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA) Mervat Tallawy, and Ambassador Said Kamel, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League for Palestinian Affairs, will hold a press conference to launch the “Arab-International Forum on Rehabilitation and Development in the Occupied Palestinian Territory: Towards an Independent State” at 11am on Monday, 7 June 2004 at the UN House, Beirut.
The Forum, which will be held under the auspices of The President of the Lebanese Republic General Emile Lahoud, comes in reply to two resolutions adopted by ESCWA Ministerial Sessions in 2001 and 2003 calling on the Commission to contribute to the rehabilitation of the economic sectors in Palestine and take the necessary measures for its implementation.
The Arab-International Forum has received the support of the Palestinian Council of Ministers, which issued a decree on 12 July 2003 reiterating the importance of the Forum and its preparatory process, and calling on all concerned parties to support it as a fundamental step towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Similarly, two resolutions were adopted, one at the ministerial level meeting of the League of Arab States (LAS) on 9 August 2003, and the other at the 16th Arab Summit held in Tunis on 21 and 22 May 2004. The two resolutions commended the initiative of ESCWA, Arab League and the Palestinian Authority in organizing the Forum, and called on all Arab funds and Arab economic and financial organizations to support it.
