Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry Meets with the
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Jeddah

On Wednesday June 18th 2014, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in the framework of their participation in the Ministerial Meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation that is currently being held in Jeddah. During the meeting, President Abbas congratulated Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on assuming his new position as the new Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reviewed the latest developments in Egypt, and the success of the Egyptian government in implementing two phases within the framework of the future road map, stressing the government’s intention in implementing the final phase of the road map through conducting legislative elections.

The ministry spokesman added that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry congratulated Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the formation of the Palestinian National Unity government, and also invited President Abbas to visit Cairo, stressing Egypt’s long-standing support to the Palestinian cause, further to supporting it at all international arenas on the basis of achieving the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the borders of June 4th 1967, with its capital in East Jerusalem.

The spokesman further stated that the Palestinian President deliberated the status quo of the stagnant Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, for which the Israeli side should shoulder the responsibility of delaying its progress, further to pursuing practices that represent flagrant violations of international law. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas further expressed his appreciation of Egypt’s support to the Palestinian cause, and the valid rights of the Palestinian people.
