New York - The United Arab Emirates pledged a 500.000 US dollars in donation to UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), said member of the UAE delegation to the United Nations Salama Salim Al Dhaheri.
In an official statement in New York at a recent meeting of the United Nations and its partners to launch their largest ever appeal for emergency aid to the occupied Palestinian territory and UNRWA operations, Al Dhaheri reiterated UAE's commitment to render all forms of direct and indirect support to the Palestinian refugees who are reeling under the Israeli aggressions and economic siege.
The statement urged the international community and donors to increase their financial commitments to UNRWA to help the organization cushion a deteriorating situation in the Palestine and meet the increasingly growing urgent humanitarian, social, educational needs of Palestinian refugees as a result of deliberate destruction of infrastructure in Palestinian camps and cities by Israeli forces and the consequent disruption of UNRWA's operations.
Growing numbers of Palestinians are currently unable to cover their daily food needs and agencies report that basic services such as health care and education are deteriorating and set to worsen much further. Currently, 453.6 million US dollars are currently sought by 12 UN agencies together with 14 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the occupied Palestinian territory for 2007.
