which the Security Council is seized and on the stage reached in their consideration

Addendum


Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement.

The list of items of which the Security Council is seized is contained in documents S/2002/30 of 15 March 2002, S/2002/30/Add.1 of 22 March 2002, S/2002/30/Add.2 of 25 March 2002, S/2002/30/Add.3 of 26 March 2002, S/2002/30/Add.5 of 1 April 2002 and S/2002/30/Add.13 of 9 April 2002.

During the week ending 15 June 2002, the Security Council took action on the following items:

Meeting of the Security Council with the troop-contributing countries to the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo pursuant to resolution 1353 (2001), annex II, section A (see S/2001/15/Add.42 and 43; and S/2002/30/Add.9; see also S/1996/15/Add.43-45; S/1997/40/Add.5, 7, 9, 13, 16, 17 and 21; S/1998/44/Add.28, 35 and 49; S/1999/25/Add.10, 13, 24, 30, 43, 47 and 49; S/2000/40/Add.3, 7, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23, 30, 33, 40, 47 and 49; S/2001/15/Add.5, 8, 18, 24, 30, 35, 36, 43, 45, 50 and 51; and S/2002/30/Add.4, 8, 11, 20 and 22)

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4550th (private) meeting, held on 11 June 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.

At the close of the meeting, in accordance with rule 55 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the following communiqué was issued through the Secretary-General in place of a verbatim record:

“On 11 June 2002, the Security Council, pursuant to annex II, section A, of resolution 1353 (2001), held its 4550th meeting in private with the troop-contributing countries to the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“The Security Council and the troop-contributing countries heard a briefing under rule 39 of its provisional rules of procedure by Amos Namanga Ngongi, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Chief of the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“The members of the Council had a constructive exchange of views with representatives of participating troop-contributing countries.”

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4551st meeting, held on 13 June 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations operation in Cyprus (S/2002/590).

The President drew attention to a draft resolution (S/2002/652) that had been prepared in the course of the Council’s prior consultations.

The Security Council proceeded to vote on draft resolution S/2002/652, and adopted it unanimously as resolution 1416 (2002) (for the text, see S/RES/1416 (2002); to be issued in Official Records of the Security Council, Fifty-seventh Year, Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council, 2002).

By a letter dated 11 June 2002 addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2002/655), the Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations, acting in his capacity as Chairman of the Group of Arab States for the month of June 2002, and on behalf of the States members of the League of Arab States, requested the convening of an urgent meeting of the Security Council to consider “the extremely grave and deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including Jerusalem, with the aim of ensuring the implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions”.

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4552nd meeting, held on 13 June 2002 in accordance with that request. There was one suspension and one resumption of the meeting.

The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representatives of Bahrain, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, South Africa, Spain, the Sudan, Tunisia and Turkey, at their request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote.

In response to the request contained in a letter dated 12 June 2002 from the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2002/658), the President, in accordance with the rules of procedure and the previous practice in that regard, invited the Permanent Observer of Palestine to participate in the discussion.

In response to the request contained in a letter dated 12 June 2002 from the Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the President extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to the Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, Mr. Papa Louis Fall.

The meeting was suspended.

Upon the resumption of the meeting, the President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of Saudi Arabia, at his request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote.

The Security Council met to consider the item at its 4553rd (private) meeting, held on 13 June 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.

The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at his request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote.
