which the Security Council is seized and on the stage reached
in their consideration


Addendum

Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement.

The list of items of which the Security Council is seized is contained in documents S/2004/20 of 14 February 2004, S/2004/20/Add.4 of 5 March 2004, S/2004/20/Add.12 of 7 May 2004 and S/2004/20/Add.15 of 28 May 2004.

During the week ending 24 April 2004, the Security Council took action on the following items:

By a letter dated 19 April 2004 addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2004/303), the Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Group of Arab States for the month of April 2004, and on behalf of the States members of the League of Arab States, requested that an immediate meeting of the Security Council be convened “to consider Israel’s grave violations of international humanitarian law, the most recent of which is the extrajudicial execution of Dr. Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi in Gaza, and the escalation of its military attacks against the Palestinian people and their leadership, and to take the necessary measures in this regard”.

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4945th meeting, held on 19 April 2004 in response to the above request.

The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representatives of Bahrain, Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Ireland, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, Norway, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, at their request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote.

In response to the request contained in a letter dated 19 April 2004 from the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2004/305), the President, in accordance with the rules of procedure and the previous practice in that regard, invited the Permanent Observer of Palestine to participate in the discussion.

In response to the request contained in a letter dated 19 April 2004 from the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations (S/2004/306), the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Yahya Mahmassani, Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States to the United Nations.

In response to the request contained in a letter dated 19 April 2004 from the Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the President extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Paul Badji, Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4951st meeting, held on 23 April 2004 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.

In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council’s prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Terje Roed-Larsen, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and Personal Representative of the Secretary-General.
