UNITED NATIONS PALESTINE COMMISSION

(pls. see A/AC.21/M/6 for pp. 1-2)

We are recognized in this respect also by other organs of the U.N., for instance, by the Working Committee of the Trusteeship Council in the matter of the Draft Constitution for the City of Jerusalem and by the Social and Economic Council.

Leaders of our Palestine Organization have recently come to this country and would be prepared to submit their views together with our New York Executive.

We remain,

Yours respectfully,
AGUDAS ISRAEL WORLD ORGANIZATION

UNITED NATIONS PALESTINE COMMISSION
Statement by the Secretary of State of the United
States on the Palestine Question

“SECRETARY OF STATE MARSHALL SAID TODAY THAT DECISIVE ACTION BY THE UNITED NATIONS ON THE PALESTINE PROBLEM IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE TO THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD ORGANIZATION.

MARSHALL TOLD A NEW CONFERENCE THAT THE UNITED STATES HAS REACHED AN APPROXIMATE DECISION ON WHAT IT IS WILLING TO DO TOWARD CARRYING OUT THE UN DECISION TO DIVIDE THE TROUBLED HOLY LAND BETWEEN JEWS AND ARABS. THE DECISION WILL BE DISCLOSED TO THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL NEXT TUESDAY.

ASKED WHETHER HE THOUGHT FAILURE OF THE UN TO MAKE THE PARTITION OF PALESTINE STICK WOULD BE FATAL TO THE ORGANIZATION, MARSHALL REPLIED THAT HE DID NOT THINK THAT IN SUCH A CASE THE UN WOULD BE KILLED OFF IN A SINGLE BLOW. BUT HE ADDED THAT IT IS OF VAST IMPORTANCE TO ITS EFFECTIVE EXISTENCE -- WHATEVER IT DOES.

THE SECRETARY REFUSED TO DISCLOSE IN ANY WAY THE NATURE OF THE DECISION REACHED BY THIS GOVERNMENT ON ITS FUTURE POLICY TOT:A.RD
PALESTINE.

HE WAS ASKED SPECIFICALLY ABOUT AMERICAN POLICY TOWARD THE RECOMMENDATION FOR A UN ARMY TO ENFORCE THE PARTITION OF PALESTINE INTO JEWISH AND ARAB STATES. THAT, HE SAID, WILL HAVE TO AWAIT THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE U.S. DELEGATE TO TH UN ONTUESDAY.

THE ARMS EMBARGO, CRITICIZED BY MANY CONGRESSMEN, IS BEING STUDIED AND REVIEWED ALONG WITH THE PALESTINE SITUATION, HE SAID. BUT AT THE MOMENT THERE IS NO CHANGE ON THE AMERICAN EMBARGO ON ARMS TO PALESTINE.”
