Recent developments in areas including Jerusalem and the West bank
(Statement by Foreign Press Secretary Norio Maruyama)

1. In relation to the recent developments arising from the attacks which occurred in the Old City of Jerusalem, on July 14, Japan is deeply concerned about the series of clashes and attacks in areas including Jerusalem and the West bank, causing casualties from people including Israelis and Palestinians. Japan extends its sincere condolences to the bereaved families of the victims, and expresses its heartfelt sympathy to those who were injured.

2. The series of violence cannot be justified for any reason, and Japan condemns such acts of violence. Stressing that the sanctity of the holy place should be respected, Japan calls on all the parties concerned to restore the calm and not to escalate the situation.

3. Japan stresses that all the parties concerned need to continue their efforts for achieving peace.
