ACTIVITIES OF SECRETARY-GENERAL IN EGYPT, 18 - 19 JUNE

The Secretary-General arrived in Cairo from Tehran in the evening of Sunday, 18 June. He met there Foreign Minister Amre Moussa. They discussed the latest developments in southern Lebanon as the Security Council in New York debated a draft text approving the Secretary-General's confirmation that Israel had fully withdrawn from Lebanon. They discussed a number of other issues, including the impact of sanctions on the civilian population of Iraq, and the reform of the Security Council. Afterwards, they jointly gave a press conference. The Foreign Minister then hosted a dinner in the Secretary-General's honour.
On Monday morning, the Secretary-General met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak before leaving for Lebanon. They spoke about the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, the Middle East peace process, Eritrea and Ethiopia, and other United Nations-related issues.
Later that day, the Secretary-General flew to Beirut, Lebanon.
