        Security Council
8 December 2000

Original: English

Letter dated 6 December 2000 from the Secretary-General
addressed to the President of the Security Council

I have the honour to refer to paragraph 34 of my report to the Security Council dated 20 July 2000 (S/2000/718), in which I expressed my intention to appoint a senior official to be based in Beirut and help coordinate United Nations activities with regard to the South of Lebanon.

I have now decided to appoint Staffan de Mistura to undertake the corresponding function, at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, as my Personal Representative for Southern Lebanon. He will be succeeding Rolf Göran Knutsson, who has been reassigned to Geneva. Mr. de Mistura will be working in close coordination with the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Terje Roed-Larsen, and will take up his assignment in Beirut at the beginning of January 2001.

(Signed) Kofi A. Annan
