Letter dated 16 June 1999 from the Permanent Representative
of Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General


On instructions from my Government and further to our earlier letters concerning Israel's attacks on southern Lebanon and the Western Bekaa and the arbitrary practices against the civilian inhabitants in which it engages on a daily basis, I have the honour to notify you of the series of such incidents that took place in May 1999.

1 May 1999

At 0105 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 10 155-mm artillery shells at Jabbur pool from the Abu Qamhah position.

At various times between 0025 and 0525 hours Israeli occupation forces and the proxy militia in positions at Tall Ya`qub, Zafatah, Jabal Balat and Dabshah hill fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm, Zibqin, Majdal Zun, Mazra`at al-Hamra and the area around Dabshah hill.

For unknown reasons, the Lahad proxy militia continued to keep the Rum-Jazzin crossing closed.

At 1150 hours Israeli occupation forces and the proxy militia in positions on Sujud hill and Shurayfah hill fired several 155-mm artillery shells and directed bursts of fire at the area around Sujud hill and the Umqata lowland. A shell landed in Sarba near the home of Idmun al-Haluw, causing serious damage.

Lahad proxy militia elements expelled Ali Husayn Hammadah, 59, and Zahrah Husayn Shararah, 60, from Bint Jubayl, their home town, by way of the Bayt Yahun crossing because their two sons refused to cooperate with the occupation.


Between 1705 and 1740 hours Israeli occupation forces at Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort) fired several rifle-launched grenades at areas around the castle and outlying areas of Yuhmur and Arnun.

Between 2045 and 2110 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun and Zibqin from inside the occupied strip.

At 2305 hours Israeli occupation positions in the occupied strip shelled the outskirts of Zibqin, Shu`aytiyah and Jibal al-Butm.

2 May 1999

Between 0800 and 0815 hours the Lahad proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells, two 120-mm mortar shells and two direct-fire rounds at outlying areas of Zibqin, Izziyah and Majdal Zun from positions at Tall Ya`qub, Hardhun and Shama`.

At 0920 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at areas along the Tasah spring, Mlita and the area around Sujud hill from their positions at Shurayfah and Ksarat al-Urush.

Between 1015 and 1130 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South, the Western Bekaa and Mount Lebanon at high altitudes and a reconnaissance aircraft overflew areas of the South.

At 1030 hours the Lahad militia prevented a funeral procession from using the Bayt Yahun crossing so that the deceased, Safiyah Faw`ani, could be buried in Hula, her home town. A warning was issued that anyone who tried to approach would be fired upon. The elements stationed at the crossing also prevented people from Hula from crossing to attend the funeral.

At 1620 hours occupying Israeli forces fired five 155-mm artillery shells at the Surayrah hills from the Abu Qamhah position.

At intervals between 1720 and 2130 hours Israeli occupation forces at Ksarat al-Urush and Shurayfah hill fired several 120-mm mortar shells at areas along the Tasah spring, the outskirts of Luwayzah, Mlita hill and the area around Sujud hill.

At 2250 hours Israeli forces at Tall Ya`qub fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Zibqin and Izziyah. The shelling continued until 0345 hours on 3 May.

3 May 1999

At intervals between 0530 and 0610 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0610 hours occupying Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 120-mm mortar shells and 155-mm artillery shells at the area around Sujud hill and areas along the Zahrani River from the Shurayfah and Zafatah positions.

Between 0700 and 0740 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells, 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and direct-fire rounds at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Mansuri, Izziyah and Hinniyah from the Tall Ya`qub and Radar positions.

At 0955 hours Israeli warplanes carried out a mock attack on an outlying area of Jibal al-Butm, breaking the sound barrier.

At 1145 hours Muhammad Husayn al-Zayn was seriously wounded in his home in Majdal Silm when it came under fire from an Israeli occupation position in Tallusah.

At intervals between 1140 and 1750 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Western Bekaa, the North, Kasrawan, the Shuf and the South at high altitudes. A reconnaissance aircraft also overflew the South.

At 1850 hours Israeli forces at Abu Qamhah and on Ahmadiyah hill fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at the outskirts of Qilya and Zillaya and at Jabal Abu Rashid.

At 1905 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 155-mm high-explosive and phosphorus artillery shells at areas along the Litani River south of Zillaya. The shelling caused fires to break out among the olive trees.

At 2100 hours Israeli forces at Abu Qamhah fired two 155-mm artillery shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr and launched one illumination flare over the Zimriya position.

At 2340 hours Israeli forces shelled the Sawwan area between Zawtar al-Gharbiyah and Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr from the Zafatah position.

4 May 1999

Between 0000 and 0030 hours Israeli occupation forces and the collaborators' militia in positions at Ruways, Ruwaysat al-Jamus, Ayn Qinya and Abu Qamhah fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Tiri, Rshaf, Haddatha, Jabal Bir al-Dahr and the Mimis sector.

At 0450 hours an Israeli gunboat off Bayyadah fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0500 hours the Lahad militia fired three 130-mm artillery shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from the Ayn Qinya position.

Between 0915 and 0930 hours the Lahad militia fired several 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Haddatha from the Ruways position north-east of Rshaf.

Between 1050 and 1355 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South, the Western Bekaa and Mount Lebanon.

Between 0900 and 1220 hours four Israeli occupation bulldozers levelled the shoulders of the Hasbayya - Abu Qamhah road, uprooting a number of olive trees and destroying crops.

Between 1615 and 1625 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South and the Western Bekaa at various altitudes and attacked Shamis (north of Ayn al-Majdalayn in Jazzin district).

At 2000 hours the Lahad militia strafed the area around the Hardhun hill position (north-west of Shama`) with medium-weapons fire. The high-tension cable was hit in the shooting and electricity supply to Mansuri and Majdal Zun was disrupted.

At 2145 hours the Lahad proxy militia fired several 120-mm mortar shells at the Kurum al-Arz area, Jazzin district, from the Ayn al-Tughrah position.

Between 2230 and 2300 hours Israeli helicopters overflew Hinniyah, Majdal Zun, Zibqin, Jibal al-Butm and Hannawiyah and fired eight air-to-surface missiles at outlying areas of Hinniyah, Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin. One dwelling in Zibqin received direct hits from three missiles and other dwellings were damaged.

At 2230 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the Shaykh Habib neighbourhood of Ba`labakk, firing an air-to-surface missile. One building was demolished and an adjacent mosque was damaged; and three residents were wounded, namely In`am Amhaz, Ali Abd al-Karim Amhaz and Husayn al-Jamal.

5 May 1999

At 0510 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

At 0500 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0930 hours the Lahad proxy militia closed the Batir-Jazzin crossing to passage in both directions.

Between 1120 and 1125 hours Israeli forces fired three 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jba` from the Shurayfah position. They resumed shelling from the same position at 1130 hours and fired at Wadi Kafra (north-east of Jba`), Jabal al-Rafi` and outlying areas of Luwayzah.

Between 1215 and 1245 hours Israeli occupation forces at Abu Qamhah and Ibl al-Saqi fired 22 155-mm artillery shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr and outlying areas of Ayn al-Tinah.

At intervals between 1315 and 1515 hours Israeli warplanes and a reconnaissance aircraft overflew the South, the Western Bekaa and the North. At 1450 hours they attacked areas along the Litani River between Zillaya and Yuhmur, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

Between 1550 and 1610 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 20 155-mm artillery shells at areas along the Litani River from the Abu Qamhah position.

At 2140 hours Israeli occupation forces fired four 155-mm artillery shells at Mazra`at al-Hamra from the Shurayfah position.

At 2210 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the area between Ayn Bu Siwar and Jabal Safi, firing five air-to-surface missiles, while an Israeli gunboat off the southern coast was strafing the shore between Mansuri and Ra's al-Ayn.

Between 2300 and 2320 hours Israeli forces fired five 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Qaysiyah and shelled the Ayn area, between Yatar and Jibal al-Butm, from positions in the occupied strip.

At 2310 hours two Israeli helicopters strafed the outskirts of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin while Israeli warplanes overflew Tyre at low altitudes.

6 May 1999

Between 0510 and 0620 hours Israeli occupation forces and the proxy militia in positions at Suwayda, Dabshah, the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint and Tall Ya`qub fired several 81-mm mortar shells at areas along the Zahrani River and areas around Dabshah hill and several 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Qaysiyah and outlying areas of Yatar.

At 0645 hours Mazra`at al-Hamra, the Yuhmur lowland and the outskirts of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Zawtar al-Gharbiyah came under artillery fire from the Israeli occupation position at Zafatah.

At 0710 hours Israeli forces at Dabshah hill fired three 155-mm artillery shells at the Yuhmur lowland.

At 0730 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Yatar, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

At 0850 hours several 155-mm artillery shells fired from Israeli occupation positions in the occupied strip fell in the Birkah locality, between Majdal Silm and Shaqra.

Between 1015 and 1030 hours the Lahad collaborators' militia fired three artillery shells at the southernmost neighbourhood of Arabsalim. A house belonging to Husayn Ahmad Salih was badly damaged.

At 1130 hours Israeli occupation forces fired four 155-mm artillery shells from the Abu Qamhah position that fell near the vocational school in Mashgharah.

Between 1755 and 1820 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Yatar, Izziyah and Qulaylah from the Tall Ya`qub position.

At 1900 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Qulaylah and Hinniyah, firing three air-to-surface missiles. Five occupied dwellings in Qulaylah were damaged.

At 2310 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Qaysiyah and outlying areas of Khirbat Silm and Yatar from the positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint and Tall Ya`qub while Israeli helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft overflew the Tibnin and Tyre areas at medium altitudes.

At 2335 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at the Yuhmur lowland and outlying areas of Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr from the Shurayfah and Zafatah positions.

7 May 1999

At 0430 hours Israeli occupation forces at Dabshah hill fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Mayfadun. One resident, Qasim Ali al-Madhbuh, was wounded in the shelling.

Between 0930 and 1030 hours an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft overflew the Nabatiyah, Iqlim al-Tuffah, Sidon East and Western Bekaa areas.

Between 1215 and 1230 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Zibqin, Mansuri, Majdal Zun, the area around Sujud hill and areas along the Tasah spring from the Tall Ya`qub and Shurayfah positions.

Between 1330 and 1430 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South and the Rashayya district.

At 1500 hours Israeli forces fired 14 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yatar from the Tall Ya`qub position.

At 1540 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Yatar, firing eight air-to-surface missiles.

At 1840 hours Israeli forces fired six 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yatar from the Tall Ya`qub position.

Between 1930 and 2010 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South. At 1940 hours they attacked outlying areas of Yatar, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

At 2300 hours Israeli forces at Tahrah fired five artillery shells at the Maydanah lowland and Wadi al-Akhdar near Arabsalim and Kafr Rumman.

8 May 1999

During the morning, the Lahad proxy militia proceeded to close the Batir-Jazzin and Rum-Jazzin crossings.

At 0715 hours the Lahad militia fired three 120-mm mortar shells at the Jabbur pool area from the Ahmadiyah position.

Between 1415 and 1445 hours occupying Israeli forces fired four 160-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and five direct-fire rounds at outlying areas of Yatar from the Dahr al-Jabal position (south-east of Ramiyah).

At 1735 hours six 155-mm artillery shells fired from the occupation position at Hardhun fell in the Antarah area between Jibal al-Butm and Yatar.

At 1740 hours Israeli forces at Tall Ya`qub fired six 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin.

At 2215 hours the Lahad collaborators' militia fired five 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Ayn al-Tinah from the Ahmadiyah position.

9 May 1999

At intervals between 0430 and 0540 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

The Lahad militia prevented people from Mays al-Jabal from leaving for the liberated areas by way of the Bayt Yahun crossing.

At 1210 hours the Lahad proxy militia directed light-weapons fire at a vehicle belonging to Kamil Jawad Muruwwah of Yuhmur after he had come to a halt in order to speak with his brother near the Arnun pool. He was held for half an hour after shots were fired over his head.

At 1245 and 1345 hours Israeli occupation positions at Abu Qamhah fired 16 155-mm artillery shells at areas along the Litani River and outlying areas of Maydun and Ayn al-Tinah.

Between 1735 and 1815 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm and 160-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Yatar, Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin from the Tall Ya`qub, Dahr al-Jamal, Shurayfah and Zafatah positions.

Between 2005 and 2030 hours the Lahad collaborators' militia fired several 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jba`.

10 May 1999

At intervals between 0011 and 0515 hours Lahad proxy militia positions at Shaqif al-Naml, Rum, Suwayda and Tahrah fired several 81-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Haddatha, areas along the Zahrani River and areas around the aforesaid hills themselves.

Between 0400 and 0600 hours an Israeli gunboat off the coast between Ra's al-Ayn and Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0550 and 0610 hours the Lahad proxy militia at Zafatah, Suwayda and Tahrah fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at areas along the Zahrani River, Arabsalim, Wadi al-Kafur and Habbush. One dwelling in Arabsalim was hit in the shelling.

At 0505 hours Israeli occupation forces shelled Wadi al-Usfur and the outskirts of Arabsalim from the Dabshah and Ali al-Tahir positions.

At intervals between 1400 and 1630 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South, breaking the sound barrier in the Tyre area.

At 1820 hours Israeli occupation forces at Dahr al-Jamal and Tall Ya`qub fired 11 160-mm mortar shells and 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Zibqin, Jibal al-Butm and Yatar.

Between 1855 and 1910 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Zibqin and Yatar, firing four air-to-surface missiles.

At 2130 hours Israeli forces fired 13 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal al-Rafi` and Jabal Safi and at outlying areas of Jba` from the Shurayfah and Ksarat al-Urush positions.

11 May 1999

At 0300 hours the Lahad proxy militia fired three 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from the Ayn Qinya position.

At 0400 hours Israeli forces at Dabshah hill fired two direct-fire artillery rounds at Wadi Habbush.

Between 0430 and 0600 hours an Israeli gunboat off Qulaylah fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0515 and 0530 hours Israeli occupation forces fired six 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Rshaf from the position at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint.

At 0855 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired several 120-mm and 81-mm mortar shells and 155-mm artillery shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at the outskirts of Bra`shit and Tibnin from the positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint, Bal`awil hill and Brak al-Hajj (north-east of Bayt Yahun). In Bra`shit four dwellings, those belonging to Ahmad Khalil Shihab, Khalil Shihab, Ali Khalil Shihab and Rashid Hinnawi, were damaged, one of them receiving a direct hit.

At 1230 hours Israeli forces at Tall Ya`qub fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Mansuri, Majdal Zun, Izziyah and Zibqin.
12 May 1999

At intervals between 0100 and 0640 hours an Israeli gunboat offshore between Bayyadah and Qulaylah fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0400 hours Israeli occupation naval forces seized the fishing boat Musa (No. 1144) and detained those on board, namely Husayn Umays and Tawfiq Tifla, residents of Tyre, for five hours.

Between 1335 and 1510 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Bekaa, the Shuf and the South at high altitudes.

Between 1830 and 2330 hours Israeli occupation forces and the Lahad proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Shaqra, Majdal Silm, Bra`shit, Safad al-Battikh, Jibal al-Butm, Zibqin, Haddatha and Wadi al-Qaysiyah from positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint, Tall Ya`qub, Hulah and Shal`abun hill.

13 May 1999

Between 0005 and 0425 hours occupying Israeli forces and the collaborators' militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Shaqra, Majdal Silm, Wadi al-Qaysiyah and Saluqi from positions at Ibad and the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint.

Between 0430 and 0530 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0730 and 0900 hours Israeli forces at Shurayfah and Ksarat al-Urush fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at Mazra`at Uqmata and areas around Sujud hill.

Between 0930 and 1130 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South. At 1030 hours they attacked a dwelling belonging to Abd al-Latif Yasin on the eastern edge of Majdal Silm, firing four air-to-surface missiles. The dwelling was completely destroyed and two others were left fissured. Two residents, Abbas Ali Zayn, 21, and Hasan Samih Tarabulsi, 21, were killed.

Between 1030 and 1120 hours Israeli forces fired 16 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Shaqra, Majdal Silm, Yatar, Majdal Zun, Haris, Sribbin and Wadi al-Qaysiyah from positions at Tall Ya`qub and Mays al-Jabal.

At 1405 hours an explosive charge was detonated on the Azur road as a vehicle driven by Nimr Jibrail was passing. Mr. Jibrail, a native of Beirut, was killed instantly, and his mother, Catherine Saba, her son, Salim Ghassan Jibrail, and Violette al-Hajj also died.

Between 1545 and 1645 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Western Bekaa, the South and Mount Lebanon at various altitudes. At 1630 hours they attacked Wadi Bisri, firing an air-to-surface missile.

Between 2000 and 2030 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired 23 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Ayn al-Tinah and Jabal al-Rahibat from Ahmadiyah hill and Kurum al-Arz.

Between 2010 and 2015 hours Israeli forces fired seven 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yatar from the Tall Ya`qub position.

14 May 1999

Between 0445 and 0515 hours Israeli occupying forces fired 25 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from the Abu Qamhah position.

At 0700 hours the Lahad militia closed the Jazzin-Batir crossing to passage in the direction of the liberated areas.

Between 1030 and 1035 hours Israeli warplanes attacked Jabal al-Mubarakah between Bsaba and Mtullah, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

Between 1100 and 1110 hours the Lahad collaborators' militia directed several bursts of medium-weapons fire and fired one shell at the easternmost neighbourhood of Kafr Tibnit from Burj hill and Ali al-Tahir hill. One vehicle received a direct hit.

Between 1420 and 1500 hours the Lahad militia directed medium-weapons fire at the area around Rum hill and Israeli forces fired three 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yuhmur al-Shaqif from their position at the Markaba checkpoint.

Between 1455 and 1500 hours occupying Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Majdal Zun and Mansuri from the Tall Ya`qub and Shama` positions.

At 2330 hours Majdal Zun came under artillery fire from Israeli occupation positions in the occupied strip and a number of dwellings were damaged. At the same time, Israeli helicopters overflew Zibqin, Jibal al-Butm and Hinniyah.

15 May 1999

Between 0530 and 0645 hours occupying Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Mansuri, Izziyah, Zibqin, Jibal al-Butm, Humin, Jba`, the Mlita hills vicinity, Tahrah, Ali al-Tahir and areas along the Zahrani River from positions at Tall Ya`qub, Shurayfah, Ksarat al-Urush, Zafatah and Hardhun hill. At the same time Israeli occupation forces and their proxy militia shelled the outskirts of Haris, Haddatha, Ayta al-Jabal, Kafra, Yatar, Tibnin, Bra`shit, Shaqra, Safad al-Battikh, Majdal Silm, Sultaniyah, Sawwanah, Wadi al-Qaysiyah and the area around the Bayt Yahun crossing from their positions in the occupied strip. Two dwellings in Shaqra were hit, as were three in Haddatha, four in Majdal Zun and one in Mansuri.

At 0725 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the area between Bayt Yahun and Ayta al-Jabal, firing an air-to-surface missile.

Between 0925 and 1630 hours Israeli warplanes and reconnaissance aircraft overflew the South. At 0930 and 0937 hours they carried out two successive attacks on outlying areas of Jba`, firing four air-to-surface missiles.

At 1010 hours Lahad militia elements prevented any members of the Lebanese security forces from crossing into the occupied strip.

Between 1015 and 1105 hours the Lahad collaborators' militia fired three 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Bayt Yahun from the Saff al-Hawa' position.

The Lahad militia continued to keep the Bayt Yahun crossing closed to passage in both directions.

At 0335 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0545 and 0600 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Ayta al-Jabal, Bayt Yahun and Haddatha from their position at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint.

Between 1100 and 1215 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South. At 1150 hours they attacked the area between Jibal al-Butm and Shu`aytiyah, firing an air-to-surface missile. At 1155 hours they attacked the Jabal al-Kabir area between Siddiqin and Jibal al-Butm.

At 1620 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired several direct-fire rounds at Wadi Habbush and areas along the Tasah spring from the Shurayfah and Tahrah hill positions.

At 1845 hours Israeli forces directed several bursts of medium-weapons fire at the Arnun road from the position at Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort). The high-tension cable was cut and electricity supply to Arnun and Yuhmur was disrupted.

At 2040 hours Israeli occupation forces fired three 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Qaysiyah from the Mays al-Jabal position.

Between 2040 and 2050 hours the Lahad proxy militia and Israeli occupation forces fired eight 155-mm artillery shells and four 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Bayt Yahun, Tibnin and Haddatha from positions at Bayt Yahun, Shaqif al-Naml, Tall Ya`qub and the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint.

At 2145 hours the Lahad militia fired a guided missile at Zawtar al-Sharqiyah from the Sala`ah position. Two town residents, Saddam Bahij Harb, 19, and Farid Rashid Harb, 19, were killed. At the same time the militia fired three 155-mm artillery shells at Mazra`at al-Hamra.

18 May 1999

Between 0140 and 0235 hours occupying Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Hujayr and outlying areas of Izziyah, Zibqin, Jibal al-Butm, Kafra, Yatar, Haris, Tibnin, Sultaniyah, Khirbat Silm, Tulin, Burj Qallawiyah and Ghanduriyah from positions at Tall Ya`qub, the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint and the Markaba checkpoint. The shelling continued intermittently until 0630 hours.

At intervals between 0700 and 1110 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and directed a number of bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Tulin, Qallawiyah, Haddatha, Wadi al-Qaysiyah, Azur hill and Rum hill from positions at Mays al-Jabal, Ruways and Rum hill.

At intervals between 1300 and 1820 hours Israeli warplanes and reconnaissance aircraft overflew the South and the coastal area of the Shuf.

At 1655 hours Israeli occupation forces fired three 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Bra`shit. One landed near the home of Ali Farahat and damaged the building.

At 2210 hours Israeli forces directed several bursts of medium-weapons fire at the easternmost neighbourhood of Yuhmur from Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort). Two residents, 18-year-old Muhammad Aliq and his 17-year-old brother Hasan, were wounded.

Lahad militia elements broke into five unoccupied dwellings in Jazzin to secure accommodation for themselves.

19 May 1999

Between 0850 and 1015 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells, 120-mm mortar shells and direct-fire rounds at Wadi Habbush, the area around Sujud and outlying areas of Jba` from the Shurayfah, Dabshah and Ksarat al-Urush positions.

At 1035 hours the collaborators' militia directed several bursts of medium-weapons fire at Rshaf.

At 1200 hours Israeli forces fired three 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Sujud from Ksarat al-Urush.

Between 0100 and 0630 hours the Lahad militia and Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Jabal al-Rafi` and outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Zibqin and Mansuri from the positions at Tall Ya`qub and Zafatah.

Between 0520 and 0600 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 10 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from the Abu Qamhah position.

At 0800 hours the Lahad militia elements at the Rum checkpoint prevented Internal Security Forces officers Georges Qazzi, chief of the Saffariyah post, and Yusuf Nasr, chief of the Jazzin post, from crossing into the liberated territories to pursue inquiries into the murder of two residents of Btaddin.

At 1845 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Bra`shit, Ayta al-Jabal, Haddatha and Tibnin from their positions at Saff al-Hawa', Bal`awil hill and the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint.

Between 1835 and 1915 hours Israeli forces in the occupied strip fired 10 155-mm artillery shells at Jabal Jabbur, Abu Rashid and the Litani valley east of Yuhmur.

At 1840 hours elements of the Lahad collaborators' militia proceeded to demolish dwellings in Rum belonging to Public Security inspectors Dani Haddad, Fadi Haddad and Roger al-Khawnid and also sought to confiscate the keys to their private vehicles. They then proceeded to arrest inspectors Kamil Sulayman, Fadi Haddad and Roger al-Khawnid and to confiscate two cellular telephones they had with them.

Between 1925 and 1940 hours the Lahad militia at Rayhan and Alman fired several 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jba` and areas along the Litani River south of Zawtar al-Gharbiyah.

Between 0000 and 0035 hours Israeli occupation forces and the collaborators' militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire from positions at Tall Ya`qub, Hardhun hill, Radar hill, Qantarah and the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint. In the shelling of Mansuri two residents, Muhammad As`ad Banjak and Naji Hasan Rida, were wounded by shrapnel from a fragmentation shell.

At 1300 hours the Lahad proxy militia directed several bursts of fire in all directions from the Shaqif position. The high-tension cable was cut and electricity supply to Arnun and Yuhmur al-Shaqif was disrupted.

Between 0500 and 0535 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia directed medium-machine-gun fire at areas around Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort), Ali al-Tahir hill and Hardhun hill. They also fired seven 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Ghanduriyah and Wadi al-Hujayr from the positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint and the castle itself.

Between 0740 and 0750 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Mazra`at al-Hamra, outlying areas of Mlikh and the outskirts of Sujud from their position at Shurayfah.

At 0800 hours the Lahad militia fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Zawtar al-Gharbiyah from the Sala`ah position. A fire was ignited that consumed a number of olive trees and destroyed crops.

At 1630 hours Israeli forces erected a barrier on the Arnun-Yuhmur road, stopped a number of vehicles and detained a resident, Iyad Sa`id, for one hour.

Between 1820 and 1910 hours the Lahad militia fired several 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Haddatha and the area around Rum hill from the Ruways and Rum hill positions.

At 0230 hours Israeli occupation forces fired a tank shell into the Mimis sector from the Ayn Qinya position. A fire broke out among the olive trees and crops were damaged.

Between 0435 and 0500 hours the collaborators' militia fired several 81-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Bra`shit from Bal`awil hill.

At 1200 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired three 155-mm artillery shells and 12 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Mansuri and Buyut al-Siyad from positions at Tall Ya`qub, Hardhun, Rajmin and the Hamra and Bayyadah crossings. Three shells also fell near the UNIFIL Nepalese battalion's position at Izziyah.

At 1330 hours Israeli forces shelled the Bayyad area between Habbush and Dayr al-Zahrani.

At 1500 hours several artillery shells fired from Israeli occupation positions at Tahrah and Suwayda fell in the Kafr Rumman area. A fire broke out in the vicinity of the town and areas under cultivation were damaged.

25 May 1999

At 0555 hours Israeli occupation forces fired four 120-mm mortar shells at Mazra`at Uqmata from the Ksarat al-Urush position.

Between 1105 and 1115 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired nine 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at areas along the Litani River to the east of Zillaya and the Zalafah area.

Between 1215 and 1740 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Tyre, Nabatiyah and Iqlim al-Tuffah areas as well as the Western Bekaa and the coastal area of the Shuf.

Between 1410 and 1500 hours the collaborators' militia directed medium-weapons fire at areas around the positions at Hula and Bayt Yahun, igniting a fire outside Tibnin that destroyed an area of 25,000 square metres.

Two residents were killed and two were wounded in the shelling, and two dwellings in Kafr Tibnit were damaged.

At 0420 hours the proxy militia fired three 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Haddatha.

Between 0430 and 0500 hours an Israeli gunboat fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0825 and 0840 hours Israeli forces in the occupied strip fired several shells at the Mansuri-Majdal Zun road and several shells fell near dwellings and a school in Mansuri.

Between 0820 and 0900 hours the militia collaborating with Israel fired several 120-mm mortar shells and direct-fire rounds and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Mansuri, Hinniyah and Buyut al-Siyad from positions at Tall Ya`qub, Hardhun and Bayyadah. The shelling damaged a dwelling belonging to Amin Alyan in Bayyadah and a dwelling belonging to Yusuf Mahmud Safi al-Din in Buyut al-Siyad.

Between 1715 and 1800 hours the proxy militia at Ayn al-Tughrah and Rum hill fired several 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jba`.

Between 0015 and 0025 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at the area around Sujud hill from the Shurayfah position.

Between 0810 and 0920 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Yatar, majdal Zun, Jba`, Yuhmur, Mazra`at al-Hamra, Wadi al-Qaysiyah, Kafra and the Litani valley near Zillaya from positions at Shurayfah, the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint, Tall Ya`qub, Zafatah, Dahr al-Ramlah and Abu Qamhah.

At intervals between 0930 and 1215 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South, the Western Bekaa, the North and Mount Lebanon breaking the sound barrier.

At 0930 hours the Lahad militia prevented people from Mimis from entering the occupied strip by way of the Zimriya crossing in order to put pressure on those of them who had condemned and protested against the abduction of Shaykh Hamad Salman Barakat, found dead on 26 May outside their occupied town.

At 1100 and 1130 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South and broke the sound barrier over Sidon.

Between 0600 and 0900 Israeli occupation forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and direct-fire rounds and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Arabsalim, Habbush, Luwayzah, Jabal al-Rafi`, the Yuhmur lowland, areas along the Zahrani River, the Mazra`at al-Hamra vicinity and Mlita hill from their positions in the occupied strip. A villa belonging to Husayn Salih was damaged in the shelling of Arabsalim.

Between 1015 and 1020 hours Israeli forces fired seven 155-mm artillery shells at Jabal Jabbur and Jabal al-Muqawamah from inside the occupied strip.

At intervals between 1100 and 1200 hours occupying Israeli forces and the collaborators' militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at Jba` and Wadi Kafra from positions at Zafatah, Shurayfah and Ayn al-Tughrah. Two dwellings, one belonging to Muhammad Yusuf Karki and the other to Abbas Harashi, received direct hits in the shelling of Jba`.

Between 1125 and 1155 hours Israeli forces fired 22 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Habib from the Shurayfah and Abu Qamhah positions.

Between 1250 and 1325 hours two Israeli helicopters flew over Ahmadiyah hill and Israeli warplanes overflew the Western Bekaa. They attacked the Tumat Niha valley, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

Between 1330 and 1400 hours Israeli forces fired several 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Habbush and Arabsalim and at areas along the Zahrani River from positions at Shurayfah, Zafatah and Suwayda hill. In the shelling of Arabsalim, an 81-mm mortar shell hit and seriously damaged the town school, dwellings belonging to Salim Abbud and Muhammad Salih Shararah were hit, the town's electricity supply was disrupted and several fires broke out.

Between 1815 and 1845 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South, the Western Bekaa and the Shuf. At 1820 hours they attacked Mazra`at Kafra, north-east of Jba`, firing an air-to-surface missile. At 1845 hours they attacked the Tumat Niha valley and Jabal Mashgharah, firing six air-to-surface missiles.

Between 1945 and 2030 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jba` and Mazra`at Kafra from the Shurayfah and Zafatah positions. They also fired several 81-mm mortar shells at Dayr al-Shaqadif

At 0420 hours occupying Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at the Yuhmur lowland from the Shurayfah position.

Between 0430 and 0500 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0700 and 0930 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South. At 0705 and 0735 hours they carried out four attacks on Mlita hill, firing four air-to-surface missiles.

At 1110 hours the collaborators' militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and three direct-fire rounds at outlying areas of Ayn Qana and Sarba and at areas along the Tasah spring from positions in the occupied strip.

At 1130 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the area between Qabrikha and Tulin in two waves.

At 1735 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yuhmur from the Zafatah and Shurayfah positions.

Between 1845 and 1915 hours Israeli warplanes in successive waves attacked the Iqlim al-Tuffah heights, Luwayzah and Mlita, firing four air-to-surface missiles.

At 1945 hours Israeli occupation forces directed machine-gun fire at Kafr Rumman from the positions opposite. Two residents, Abd al-Karim Mudlij, 60, and his wife, Zahrah Abu Zayd, 25, were wounded.

At intervals between 2030 and 2315 hours Israeli forces and the proxy militia in positions at Rum, Tughrah, Bal`awil and Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort) directed several bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Bra`shit and areas around the positions themselves.

Between 2330 and 2355 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Tibnin area. At 2335 hours they attacked outlying areas of Qabrikha and Tulin, firing three air-to-surface missiles.

31 May 1999

At 0100 hours the Lahad militia fired three 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Bra`shit from the Bal`awil position.

Between 0330 and 0530 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0440 and 0545 hours the Lahad militia and occupying forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm and 81-mm mortar shells and directed a number of bursts of medium-weapons fire at the Yuhmur lowland, areas along the Litani River towards Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, the abandoned Lebanese Army barracks in Nabatiyah, and outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Mansuri, Qabrikha and Tulin from positions at Zafatah, Sala`ah, Dabshah, Tahrah, Tall Ya`qub, Tayr Harfa and Hardhun. In the shelling of Tulin one resident, Fatimah Hasan Mahmud, was wounded. Three dwellings in Bra`shit were hit, as were two in Tulin.

At 0500 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad proxy militia in positions on Bal`awil hill fired several 81-mm mortar shells and bursts of machine-gun fire. One shell landed on a UNIFIL position manned by the Irish battalion in Bra`shit, and one of its personnel was killed and another was wounded.

At 1400 hours the Lahad militia directed medium-machine-gun fire at Arnun. Crops were set on fire and the conflagration consumed an area of some 2,000 square metres.

At 1610 hours occupation forces shelled the Iqlim al-Tuffah heights, Jabal al-Rafi`, Mlita, Luwayzah, Mazra`at Umqata and Sujud from their positions in the occupied strip.

At 1910 hours the proxy militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi Habbush from the Zafatah position.

At 2105 hours the proxy militia fired three 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun from the Rajmin position.

The Lebanese Government strongly condemns the continued Israeli occupation and the fresh attacks and arbitrary practices against the Lebanese civilian population that have left a number of dead and wounded and have caused further serious damage to property.

Like previous attacks, this new series is in flagrant violation of the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon and constitutes a breach of the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, of international law and of basic human rights.
