Letter dated 19 May 1999 from the Permanent Representative
of Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the
Secretary-General


On instructions from my Government and further to our earlier letters concerning Israel's attacks on southern Lebanon and the Western Bekaa and the arbitrary practices against the civilian inhabitants in which it engages on a daily basis, I have the honour to notify you of the series of such incidents that took place in April 1999.

1 April 1999

At 0550 hours Israeli occupying forces fired a 120-mm mortar shell at an outlying area of Zibqin from their position at Jabal Balat.

Israeli forces bulldozers levelled the shoulders of the main roads between Marj Uyun and Hasbayya, Marj Uyun and Jazzin, and Khiyam and the western sector.

Between 0600 and 0625 hours Israeli forces fired 10 130-mm artillery shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from their position at Abu Qamhah.

At 1030 hours Israeli forces fired five 155-mm shells at outlying areas of Zibqin and Jibal al-Butm.

At 1345 hours the client Lahad militia fired five 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Jabbur from its position on Ahmadiyah hill.

2 April 1999

At 0750 hours the outskirts of Mansuri and Majdal Zun came under Lahad militia artillery, mortar and heavy machine-gun fire from occupation positions in Hardun.

Between 1725 and 1745 hours Israeli forces fired four 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm from their position at Jabal Balat.

At 2100 hours Israeli forces fired three 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Ayn al-Tinah from their position at Abu Qamhah.

At 2115 hours Israeli occupation positions at Ayn Qinya fired seven artillery shells at Jabal al-Dahr in the Mimis sector.

3 April 1999

At 0500 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0630 and 0800 hours the Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at Wadi al-Hijarah and areas along the Litani River towards Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Zawtar al-Gharbiyah from its positions at Sulay`ah, Qusayr, Zafatah and Alman.

Between 1315 and 1330 hours the Lahad militia and occupying Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Mansuri and Izziyah and at areas around Hardun hill from their positions on Hardun hill itself and at Tall Ya`qub and the Bustan checkpoint.

Between 1530 and 1545 hours Israeli occupation forces fired seven direct-fire rounds at outlying areas of Majdal Zun from their position at Jabal Balat.

At 1930 hours the Lahad militia fired several 81-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at Mazra`at Uqmata and areas around Razlan hill from its position on the same hill.

4 April 1999

At 0345 hours the outskirts of Arabsalim came under artillery fire from Israeli occupation positions in the occupied strip. One person, Ali Khalil Hasan, aged 13, was wounded, and two dwellings were hit.

At 1350 hours Israeli occupation forces fired five artillery shells at outlying areas of Zillaya from their positions in the occupied strip.

At 1400 hours an Israeli 120-mm mortar shell landed 100 metres from the Lebanese Army position in Qilya and four Israeli shells fired from Ahmadiyah hill fell in areas along the Litani River south of Zillaya.

Between 1500 and 1525 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin from their positions at Tall Ya`qub and the Bustan checkpoint.

At 1530 hours Israeli occupation forces fired an artillery shell at the town of Habbush that fell on the home of Husayn Ali Itris and wounded eight persons. They were: Khadijah Ibrahim al-Himsi (aged 9); Zaynab Khudayr (aged 8); Fatimah Ali Halawani; Fatimah Qasim Ayyub (aged 7); Ala' Qasim Ayyub (aged 6); Mustafa Habib Hajij (aged 7); Latifah Sh§t (aged 25); and Musa Itris (aged 29).

At 1535 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the wadi between Jibal al-Butm and Ramadiyah, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

Between 2015 and 2035 hours Israeli occupation forces and the Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm mortar shells at Wadi al-Saluqi to the east of Qabrikha and outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm from their positions at Hula and Tall Ya`qub.

5 April 1999

At 0635 and 0700 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0835 and 0840 hours Israeli forces fired 60 155-mm artillery shells at Mazra`at al-Hamra from their position at Shurayfah.

At 1000 hours the Lahad militia at the Rum checkpoint prevented Father Niqola Darwish, Greek Catholic parish priest of Anan (Jazzin) and Kafr Hunah, from crossing to Jazzin to celebrate Easter Mass. He was informed that he was forbidden to go to the Jazzin area.

Between 1135 and 1145 hours occupying Israeli forces fired four 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Qaysiyah from their position at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint. The outskirts of Majdal Silm, Khirbat Silm, Sawwanah and Tulin also come under fire from Israeli occupation positions.

At 1510 hours Israeli forces fired four 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yatar from their position at the Bustan checkpoint.

Between 1620 and 1735 hours Israeli forces and the client militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm and 160-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Kafra, Yatar, Jibal al-Butm, Zibqin, Majdal Zun and Mansuri from their positions at Dahr al-Jabal, Tall Ya`qub and Rshaf.

At 1700 hours seven artillery shells fired from Israeli occupation positions fell in outlying areas of Arabsalim.

At 1920 hours Israeli occupation forces and the collaborators' militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells at wadi Habbush, Mazra`at al-Hamra, the Yuhmur al-Shaqif lowland and Jabal al-Rafi` from their positions at Dabshah hill, Zafatah, Ksarat al-Urush and Shurayfah. Five 155-mm artillery shells were also fired at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin.

6 April 1999

The Lahad militia prevented the inhabitants of Hula from leaving for the liberated areas by engaging in a campaign of arrests of local residents. One of them was identified as Ali Abd al-Ra'uf Ayyub, aged 31.

Between 0610 and 0630 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 10 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Qaysiyah and outlying areas of Yatar and Jibal al-Butm from their positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint and Tall Ya`qub.

At 1330 hours Israeli occupation forces expelled 25 residents from the occupied strip, most of them from Shab`a, by way of the Zimriya crossing.

Between 2020 and 2105 hours the Lahad militia fired several 120-mm mortar shells at Mazra`at Uqmata, Jabal al-Rafi` and areas around Sujud hill from its position at Aramta.

Between 2050 and 2055 hours Israeli forces fired several 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells at the Dallafah spring and Jabbur hill and at an area to the south of the Lebanese Army's Qilya position from their own position at Ahmadiyah hill.

At 2220 hours Israeli forces fired two 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Zibqin from their position at Jabal Balat.

7 April 1999

Between 0110 and 0630 hours the Lahad militia fired 22 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from its position at Ayn Qinya and also directed several bursts of medium-weapons fire at Wadi Mimis.

At 1005 and 1010 hours the Lahad militia fired a 60-mm mortar shell and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Qusayr from its position in Qusayr itself.

At 1215 and 1300 hours occupying Israeli forces fired six 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun and Izziyah from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

Between 1530 and 1540 hours the client Lahad militia fired a 120-mm mortar shell and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at Haddatha and Bra`shit from its positions at Saff al-Hawa' in the Bint Jubayl area.

Between 2155 and 2205 hours the Lahad militia fired two 81-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Haddatha, Rshaf and Bayt Yahun from its positions at Shaqif al-Naml and in Rshaf itself.

At 2350 hours Israeli enemy forces engaged in intensive shelling of the Mimis sector, areas along the Fatir River and the Mimis road.

8 April 1999

Between 0035 and 0600 hours the client Lahad militia fired 16 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells at the Mimis sector and Jabal Bir al-Dahr from its positions at Abu Qamhah and Ayn Qinya.

Between 0530 and 0600 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 1250 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at the area around Sujud hill and Mazra`at Uqmata from their position at Shurayfah.

Between 1740 and 1800 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Zibqin, Jibal al-Butm and Shu`aytiyah from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

At 1950 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and a number of direct-fire rounds at Wadi al-Qaysiyah and Wadi al-Saluqi from their positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint and Tayyibah. The shelling of Wadi al-Saluqi and outlying areas of Majdal Silm resumed at 2015 hours.

9 April 1999

At 0025 hours Israeli occupation forces began concentrated shelling of areas along the Fatir River from their positions at Ayn Qinya and Zimriya.

Between 0005 and 0600 hours Israeli forces and the client militia fired several 155-mm and 130-mm artillery shells, 17 tank shells and 11 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at Jabal Bir al-Dahr, hill 910 (south of Qilya), Wadi al-Fatir and the Mimis sector from their positions at Ayn Qinya, on Ahmadiyah, Zaghlah and Zimriya hills and at Abu Qamhah. They also sent up several illumination flares over the two Ahmadiyah hills.

Between 0640 and 0650 hours Israeli forces fired three 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Tulin and Qabrikha from their position at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint.

At 0715 hours the client Lahad militia forced residents crossing from the Jazzin area to the liberated areas to go through its inspection facilities at the Rum checkpoint as part of its policy of using civilians to shield its forces from actions undertaken by the resistance.

The Lahad militia first forbid the Imam of Shab`a, Sheikh Isma`il Dallah, from preaching the Friday sermon in the town's mosque and then allowed him to do so, under threat of arrest and of reprisals against worshippers, provided that its theme was to be restricted to prayer. It also imposed a curfew in the town between 1900 and 0500 hours.

Between 1800 and 1830 hours Israeli forces and the client militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yuhmur, Izziyah, Zibqin and Majdal Zun from their positions at Tall Ya`qub and Zafatah.

10 April 1999

Between 0010 and 0630 hours the client Lahad militia fired 15 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr, Marahat al-Bashiq (south of Maydun) and areas along the Litani River from its position on Ahmadiyah hill. It also fired three 81-mm mortar shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from Zimriya hill.

The Lahad militia kept the Rum crossing closed and made its reopening conditional on the inhabitants of Rum participating in a demonstration to protest against actions by the resistance against the occupation.

At 0630 hours occupation forces shelled areas along the Zahrani River and the Luwayzah, Mlita and Jabal al-Rafi` heights from their positions in the occupied strip.

At 0700 hours an Israeli gunboat off Ra's al-Bayadah fired several bursts of miscellaneous-weapons fire at a number of fishing boats. Four boats belonging to fishermen from Tyre were hit, namely the Fatimah (No. 1316), the Hasan II (No. 1291), the Ghadir (No. 1006) and the Ilham (No. 1337).

At 1220 hours Israeli occupation forces fired three 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin from their position at the Bustan checkpoint. The shelling of the area resumed at 1720 hours, and it also extended to outlying areas of Majdal Zun and Mansuri.

Between 1755 and 1800 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Zibqin in three waves, firing an air-to-surface missile. This was preceded by an artillery bombardment of the same area.

At 1830 and 2145 hours Israeli occupation forces and the collaborators' militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of fire at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Zibqin, Yatar, Jibal al-Butm, Mazra`at Uqmata and areas around Sujud hill and Rum hill from their positions at the Bustan checkpoint and Tall Ya`qub and on Rum hill and Sujud hill.

Between 2230 and 2250 hours the Lahad militia fired four 81-mm mortar shells at the Bisri meadowland from its position on Tughrah hill.

At 2200 hours several shells fired from the adjacent Israeli positions fell on the Iqlim al-Tuffah, Luwayzah and Mlita heights.

11 April 1999

At 0835 and 0850 hours the client Lahad militia fired several rifle-launched grenades and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at areas around Ali al-Tahir hill from its position on the hill itself.

Between 1645 and 1730 hours Israeli warplanes carried out overflights at various altitudes. At 1650 and 1705 hours they executed two attacks on outlying areas of Mazra`at Ayn Bu Siwar, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

At 1755 and 1825 hours aggressor Israeli aircraft carried out two attacks on outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin, firing two air-to-surface missiles. At the same time Israeli occupation forces shelled outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin from their positions at Dahr al-Jamal and the Bustan checkpoint.

At 0825 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the Mlita and Luwayzah areas in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region. The attack resumed at 1830 hours, this time against Jabal Safi in the Iqlim al-Tuffah area.

At 1845 hours a 120-mm mortar shell fired from the occupied strip fell on the Kafr Milki-Buslayya road.

12 April 1999

At 0055 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

Between 0500 and 0530 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 1030 hours the Lahad militia prevented the Mufti of Hasbayya and Marj Uyun, Sheikh Mustafa Uthman Ghadir, who comes from Shab`a, from using the Kafr Tibnit crossing. It should be noted that Sheikh Ghadir was expelled from his town by Israeli occupation forces in 1991.

At 1015 hours the Lahad militia directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at Hawsh Azur from its position at Rum hill.

Between 0950 and 1340 hours Israeli warplanes and reconnaissance aircraft overflew areas in the South. They broke the sound barrier at 1125 hours.

Between 1100 and 1335 hours Israeli forces and the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of miscellaneous-weapons fire at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Zibqin and Mazra`at Uqmata and at areas around the positions from which they fired, namely Tall Ya`qub, Rayhan and Burj hill.

At 1600 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr, Hamra, Mlita hill, Mazra`at al-Hamra and Jabal al-Rafi` from their positions at Shurayfah, Zafatah and Ksarat al-Urush. Occupation positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint also fired at outlying areas of Burj Qallawiyah and Tulin with 155-mm artillery shells.

At 1700 hours Israeli occupation positions at Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort) and Tayyibah shelled the outskirts of Ghanduriyah, Frun and Burj Qallawiyah and areas along the Litani River.

Between 1945 and 2015 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun and Yuhmur al-Shaqif from their positions at Shurayfah, Tall Ya`qub and Zafatah.

At 2100 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jba` from their position at Shurayfah.

Between 2000 and 2200 hours two Israeli bulldozers accompanied by two armoured personnel carriers levelled the shoulders of the road from Khardali to a point opposite the easternmost neighbourhood of Arnun town in the direction of Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort).

13 April 1999

Between 0900 and 1430 hours Israeli warplanes intermittently overflew the South and the Shuf.

At 1125 hours the client Lahad militia fired several shells at Mazra`at al-Hamra and the Yuhmur lowland from its position at Zafatah.

At 1935 hours Israeli occupation forces fired two direct-fire rounds at Himi Arnun from their position at Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort), cutting off the electricity supply to Yumhur and Arnun and to the southernmost neighbourhood of Kafr Tibnit. The Lahad militia also fired several 155-mm artillery shells at the area between Mazra`at al-Hamra and Yuhmur from its position at Zafatah.

At 1955 hours Israeli forces fired three 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Zibqin from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

14 April 1999

Between 2330 and 0010 on the night of 13/14 April the Lahad militia launched four illumination flares over the area around its position at Zimriya from its position at Ayn Qinya. It also fired two 130-mm artillery shells at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from its position at Abu Qamhah.

Four Israeli forces bulldozers levelled the Marj Uyun-Ibl al-Saqi highway to a width of some 20 metres.

At 0945 hours Israeli forces fired four 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Mansuri and Majdal Zun from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

Between 1125 and 1250 hours Israeli warplanes overflew Mount Lebanon, the Bekaa, the North and the South while breaking the sound barrier.

At 1000 the outskirts of Mansuri, Majdal Zun and Jubb Suwayd came under Israeli artillery fire from positions in the occupied strip.

Between 1725 and 1850 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired a 155-mm artillery shell at an outlying area of Jibal al-Butm and several 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal Sujud from their positions at Tall Ya`qub and Zafatah.

At 2105 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Mazra`t al-Hamra from their position at Shurayfah.

Between 2300 and 2330 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 81-mm mortar shells at the abandoned Lebanese Army barracks in Nabatiyah from their position on Dabshah hill.

15 April 1999

Between 2240 and 0320 hours on the night of 14/15 April two Israeli bulldozers accompanied by two armoured personnel carriers levelled the shoulder of the Qal`at al-Shaqif - Khardali road. They also bulldozed the dwellings they had previously demolished in Arnun along the same road.

Between 0400 and 0540 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Israeli forces stationed in Arnun began to fence off the town with barbed wire. They cut off the electricity supply to the town and proceeded to seize two residents and seven civilian vehicles. The Israeli occupation forces also confiscated four cellular telephones from the detainees. Two Israeli bulldozers proceeded to level two wheat fields belonging to Abd al-Husayn Rida Maruni and Husayn Rida Ajami on the eastern side of the town as well as a garden belonging to Amin Hasan Hamdan.

At 1135 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 10 direct-fire rounds at Jabal Bir al-Dahr from their position at Ayn Qinya.

Between 1125 and 1200 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Western Bekaa, Sidon, Sidon East, Nabatiyah and Iqlim al-Tuffah.

Between 1425 and 1450 hours occupying Israeli forces and the client militia fired several rifle-launched grenades and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas south of Arnun and at areas around Burj hill from their positions at Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort) and on the hill itself.

Between 1650 and 1730 hours the Iqlim al-Tuffah heights, especially areas of Mlita and Luwayzah, and areas along the Tasah spring came under Israeli artillery fire from the positions opposite. Several 155-mm artillery shells fired from the Israeli position at Zafatah also fell on the Jabal al-Rafi` heights.

At 1845 hours Hinniyah and parts of the Umran area near Qulaylah came under Israeli artillery fire. Two shells fell near a position of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

At 1915 hours Israeli warplanes attacked Zibqin, firing two air-to-surface missiles.

Between 1945 and 2045 hours Israeli occupation forces and the client militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Khirbat Silm, Yuhmur, Mazra`at al-Hamra, Arabsalim and Wadi al-Qaysiyah from their positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint, Shurayfah and Zafatah.

16 April 1999

Between 0445 and 0530 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0600 and 0615 hours occupying Israeli forces and the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at the abandoned Lebanese Army barracks in Nabatiyah and areas along the Zahrani River from their positions at Zafatah and Shurayfah.

At 0615 hours Israeli occupation forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Kafur from their position at Shurayfah. The high-tension cable in the wadi was hit, and the electricity supply to the Nabatiyah area was disrupted.

At 0815 hours Israeli forces set off a smoke grenade at the position they had established at the Arnun pool in order to keep reporters at a distance. They later began shooting in their direction, and a correspondent for Abu Dhabi television, Qasim Ali Abd Dirgham, received a bullet wound in the back.

At 0955 hours an artillery shell fired from the Israeli positions facing Arnun fell in the Kassarat area outside Kafr Jawz, which is adjacent to Nabatiyah.

At 1300 hours Israeli forces and the client militia fired four 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Sribbin, Haris, Yatar and Haddatha from their positions at Tall Ya`qub, Ruways, a point north-west of Rshaf, Shaqif al-Naml and Shal`abun hill. A shell that landed at the northern approach to Yatar, five metres from an occupied dwelling, caused serious damage to the building.

At 1850 hours Israeli occupation forces fired three 120-mm mortar shells at areas around Mazra`at al- Hamra from their position at Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort).

At 2220 hours the client Lahad militia fired several 81-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at the easternmost neighbourhood of Kafr Rumman from its position at Burj hill.

17 April 1999

At 0830 hours Israeli occupation forces fired four 155-mm artillery shells at the Yuhmur al-Shaqif lowland from their position at Shurayfah.

Between 1010 and 1115 hours Israeli forces and the client militia in positions at Tall Ya`qub, Zafatah, Ruwaysat, Jamus and Ruways fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm and 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Yatar, Tiri, Haddatha, Mazra`at al-Hamra and Mayfadun.

At 1400 hours a vehicle arrived bringing three Lahad militia security men to Arnun. It was used to take the mayor to the Marj Uyun barracks.

At 1655 hours Israeli forces and the collaborators' militia directed several bursts of medium-weapons fire at the outskirts of Jarju` and fired three direct-fire rounds at Mazra`at Uqmata from their position on Sujud hill.

At 1755 hours occupying Israeli forces positioned at Tall Ya`qub fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Mansuri, Izziyah, Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin.

Between 1830 and 1835 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Zibqin and the Jibal al-Butm - Shuy`aytiyah triangle in two waves, firing six air-to-surface missiles.

At 2315 hours the client Lahad militia fired two direct-fire artillery rounds at outlying areas of Majdal Zun from its position at Shihin.

18 April 1999

At 0615 hours the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed a number of bursts of medium-weapons fire at Jabal al-Rafi` and the outskirts of Arabsalim and Habbush from its positions at Zafatah, Suwayda hill and Tahrah hill.

At 0625 hours Israeli occupation forces shelled the southernmost neighbourhood of Arabsalim from their positions at Suwayda, Tahrah and Ali al-Tahir. One resident, Jawad Muhammad Musa, aged 35, was wounded; two direct-fire rounds fell inside the Arabsalim school; and a three-storey dwelling was damaged.

Between 1730 and 1900 hours the client Lahad militia brought four trucks loaded with construction materials to Arnun in order to fortify the newly established position at Arnun pool.

At 1130 hours client militia elements proceeded to confiscate two cellular telephones from residents of Arnun.

At 1830 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 12 155-mm direct-fire rounds at outlying areas of Zibqin and Izziyah from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

Between 1845 and 1915 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Tyre and Tibnin areas at various altitudes. At 1850 hours they attacked outlying areas of Zibqin, firing six air-to-surface missiles.

Between 1900 and 1950 hours occupation forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Yuhmur, Wadi al-Qaysiyah, Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr and Mayfadun from their positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint and Shurayfah.

On the night of 18/19 April Israeli occupation forces raided homes in Arnun searching for cellular telephones and found and confiscated several.

19 April 1999

At 0530 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired a burst of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0830 and 1230 hours the Lahad militia proceeded to fortify its newly established position in Arnun using pumice stone and cement.

Between 0830 and 1300 hours Israeli occupation forces and the Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jba` and the area around Sujud hill from their positions at Zafatah and Ksarat al-Urush.

At 1530 hours the outskirts of Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin came under artillery fire from the positions of the occupying Israeli forces and the Lahad militia at Balat.

At 1620 hours Israeli occupation forces shelled the Wadi al-Humayr area, areas along the Litani River and outlying areas of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Zawtar al-Gharbiyah from their positions at Muhaybib and Tall Ya`qub.

Between 1645 and 1715 hours Israeli occupation forces and the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells, 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and direct-fire rounds at Mlita hill, Mazra`at Uqmata, Mlikh, outlying areas of Jba`, Jarju`, Rumin and Luwayzah, Jabal Safi and areas along the Tasah spring from their positions at Zafatah, Shurayfah, Rayhan, Ksarat al-Urush, Sujud and Razlan.

Between 1700 and 1720 hours the collaborators' militia fired 27 120-mm mortar shells and 155-mm artillery shells at the areas around the Jabbur pool and to the west of Jabal Abu Rashid from its positions on Ahmadiyah hill and Shurayfah hill.

Between 2155 and 2215 hours the Lahad militia fired four 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas Bra`shit from its position on Bal`awin hill (south of Bra`shit). The home of Muhammad Khalil Shihab was damaged.

At 2230 hours outlying areas of Tibnin, Ayta al-Jabal, Bra`shit and Haddatha came under Israeli artillery fire from positions in the occupied strip and there were some 25 incoming shells.

At 2320 hours Israeli occupation forces shelled the outskirts of Jibal al-Butm from their positions at Hardun and Balat.

20 April 1999

An Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0600 hours Israeli occupation forces and the client Lahad militia fired several 81-mm mortar shells, 155-mm artillery shells and direct-fire rounds and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at areas along the Tasah spring, at the outskirts of Habbush, Kafr Rumman and Arabsalim and at Wadi al-Kafur from their positions on Suwayda, Sujud and Shurayfah hills. One shell fell near the Arabsalim school building.

At 0610 hours the client Lahad militia fired several 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Habbush from its position on Suwayda hill.

At 1300 hours the client Lahad militia prevented the reporters waiting near Arnun from doing their jobs by firing in their direction and confiscating film and cameras.

Between 1825 and 1830 hours two Israeli helicopters overflew the Shajarat Yusuf, Khalawat and Wadi Jahannam area.

Between 1930 and 1955 hours Israeli occupation forces and the Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Mayfadun and Zawtar al Gharbiyah at a number of 60-mm mortar shells at the area around Qusayr from their positions at Shurayfah and Qusayr.

Between 2130 and 2215 hours Israeli occupation forces fired a 155-mm artillery shell at an outlying area of Jibal al-Butm from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

21 April 1999

Between 0940 and 0945 hours Israeli combat helicopters overflew Ahmadiyah hill.

At 2045 and 2220 hours Israeli occupation forces and the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun and Zibqin from their positions at Tall Ya`qub and Shihin.

22 April 1999

At 0300 hours occupying Israeli forces fired a 155-mm artillery shell at an outlying area of Zibqin from their position at the Bustan checkpoint.

At 0515 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired a burst of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 1320 and 1415 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Bekaa, the North, Mount Lebanon and the South at high altitudes while breaking the sound barrier.

Between 1955 and 2045 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Mazra`at al-Hamra from their position at Shurayfah hill.

At 2240 hours the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr.

23 April 1999

At 0515 hours two Israeli helicopters overflew Ayn al-Tinah at medium altitude carrying out provocative manoeuvres.

Between 0615 and 0625 hours Israeli occupation forces and the client militia fired several 120-mm and 81-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at areas along the Tasah spring and Mazra`at Uqmata from their positions on Sujud hill and Razlan hill.

Between 0930 and 1300 hours Israeli warplanes intermittently overflew the South, the Bekaa and the Shuf at various altitudes, dropping heat balloons in the Shuf and Western Bekaa areas.

At 1030 hours the Lahad militia fired three 120-mm mortar shells at the Maydun hills from its position on Ahmadiyah hill.

At 1430 hours Lahad militia elements erected a barrier on the Dahr al-Ramlah-Jazzin road and proceeded to search vehicles travelling in both directions and to hinder the movement of residents.

At 1530 hours Israeli occupation forces fired a shell at Kafr Tibnit from their position at Ali al-Tahir. The residents Muhammad Salim Yunus, aged 39, Walidah Salim, aged 70, and Khayriyah Nakhlah, aged 30, were wounded; the home of Muhammad Abdu Hayik was hit by several pieces of shrapnel; and a civilian vehicle and a tractor were damaged.

Between 1615 and 1645 hours occupying Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun, Mansuri and Izziyah from the Tall Ya`qub position and from inside the occupied territories south of Yarin.

At 1755 and 1815 hours occupying Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at the abandoned Lebanese Army barracks in Nabatiyah, the area around Dabshah hill and outlying areas of Majdal Zun from Dabshah hill itself and from Jabal Balat.

Between 1840 and 1905 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Izziyah and Zibqin from the Tall Ya`qub position.

At 1855 hours the area between Jibal al-Butm and Zibqin came under artillery fire from Israeli positions in Tayr Harfa and Hardun and 20 incoming shells were reported.

At 2200 hours the Lahad militia fired several 81-mm mortar shells at the concrete huts in Tumat Niha from the Tughrah hill position.

24 April 1999

Between 0005 and 0310 hours occupying Israeli forces and the Lahad militia intermittently fired several 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at the area around Rum hill and outlying areas of Majdal Zun and Zibqin from the Tall Ya`qub, Jabal Balat and Rum hill positions.

At 0610 hours Israeli forces and the client militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jba` from the Shurayfah and Zafatah positions. An 81-mm mortar shell fired from the Sujud hill position also fell in the outskirts of Humin al-Fawqa in the "Jalal al-Samak" area, five metres from a dwelling.

At 1100 hours the client militia closed the Rum checkpoint to passage in both directions. At 1110 hours it also proceeded to close the Batir-Jazzin crossing in both directions.

Between 0830 and 0858 Israeli warplanes attacked Mlita hill, Sujud hill and Batun hill (east of Batir) and the enterprise zone outside Jba` in four waves.

Between 0835 and 0845 hours Israeli warplanes carried out a mock attack on Mashgharah and attacked Jabal Abu Rashid firing an air-to-surface missile.

Between 0845 and 0945 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the concrete huts in Tumat Niha.

At 1000 hours a member of the client Lahad militia proceeded to intimidate shopkeepers in Jazzin into closing their shops, and the market there was closed.

At 1635 hours the client Lahad militia fired several 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed a number of bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Haddatha, Haris and Bra`shit from Shal`abun hill, Ruways hill and Saff al-Hawa'.

Between 1800 and 1830 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Izziyah, Zibqin and Jibal al-Butm from Tall Ya`qub.

Between 1825 and 1840 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the Tyre and Tibnin areas at various altitudes. At 1830 hours they attacked outlying areas of Zibqin in the direction of Shu`aytiyah, firing eight air-to-surface missiles.

25 April 1999

Between 0515 and 0600 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 1030 and 1250 hours Israeli warplanes intermittently overflew the South, the Bekaa and the coastal area of the Shuf.

At 1250 hours the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Kafur.

At 1650 hours occupying Israeli forces and the client militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Zibqin, Izziyah, Mansuri, Majdal Zun and Mazra`at Buyut al-Siyad from Tall Ya`qub, Hardun and Bayadah.

At 2145 hours Israeli occupation forces fired five 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Mansuri, Majdal Zun and Izziyah from their position at Tall Ya`qub.

26 April 1999

Israeli bulldozers levelled the shoulders of the roads in Arnun and stepped-up movements of mechanized units were reported inside the town.

Between 0100 and 0615 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad collaborators' militia intermittently fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Yatar and Haddatha from positions at Shaqif al-Naml, Ruways and Tall Ya`qub.

Between 0400 and 0430 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0710 hours the Lahad militia fired three 155-mm artillery shells at areas along the Litani River to the west of Zillaya.

Between 1255 and 1430 hours the Lahad militia fired three 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Majdal Zun and four 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Kafur from positions at Shihin and Zafatah. The Iqlim al-Tuffah heights came under miscellaneous artillery fire, and this was accompanied by overflights of the area by Israeli warplanes.

At 1850 hours several Israeli artillery shells fired from the adjacent occupation positions fell on the Luwayzah and Mlita heights.

At 1905 hours the Sawwan area, between Zawtar and Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr, came under intermittent Israeli fire from the positions opposite.

Between 2105 and 2220 hours occupying Israeli forces fired 10 155-mm artillery shells at Jabal Jabbur, Jabal Abu Rashid and the Jabbur pool from their position at Abu Qamhah, and an Israeli helicopter overflew Ahmadiyah hill and Kawkaba.

At 2355 hours five shells fired from the Israeli and Lahad militia positions opposite fell in the Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Zawtar al-Gharbiyah and Hamra area.

27 April 1999

At 0100 hours occupying Israeli forces fired five 155-mm artillery shells at Wadi al-Qaysiyah from their position at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint.

Between 0400 and 0430 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 0810 and 1210 hours Israeli forces fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at Jabal al-Rafi`, areas around Sujud hill and outlying areas of Bayt Yahun from their positions at Zafatah, Ksarat al-Urush and Saff al-Hawa'.

At 0810 hours Israeli forces shelled areas along the Zahrani River and Luwayzah and Mlita in the Iqlim al-Tuffah area from their positions opposite. The shelling resumed at 1150 hours and extended to Luwayzah, Mlita and Jabal al-Rafi`.

At 1130 hours five 155-mm artillery shells fired from Israeli occupation positions in the Ibl al-Saqi lowland fell in the Maydun hills.

Between 1515 and 1620 hours outlying areas of Arabsalim, Jarju`, Luwayzah, Mlikh, Jba`, Sarba, Ayn Bu Siwar and Mlita came under heavy artillery fire from Israeli positions in the occupied strip. At 1640 hours an Israeli helicopter strafed the Jabal al-Rafi` area in Iqlim al-Tuffah. A resident of Jarju`, Fatimah Muhammad Muqallad, aged 41, and her 6-year-old son, Husayn Muhammad Darwish, were wounded in the shelling. One dwelling in Jarju`, one dwelling in Nabatiyah al-Fawqa and the electricity grid were damaged.

At 1640 hours the area between Shu`aytiyah and Zibqin was attacked by Israeli warplanes and an Israeli helicopter strafed the Jabal al-Rafi` area in Iqlim al-Tuffah.

Between 1635 and 2000 hours Israeli warplanes attacked outlying areas of Zibqin and areas around Sujud hill and Mlita hill, firing 11 air-to-surface missiles.

At 1715 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the area between Jabal Safi and the Sujud position.

At 1815 hours Israeli occupation forces shelled Nabatiyah al-Fawqa and three mortar shells fell near Dayr Mar Antonius (St. Anthony's monastery).

At 1825 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the Sujud heights, firing several air-to-surface missiles. They renewed their attack on areas of Jabal al-Rafi` near Sujud, firing several air-to-surface missiles.

At 2345 hours the Wadi Mayfadun area and the area around Zawtar al-Gharbiyah came under 155-mm artillery fire from the position of the occupying Israeli forces in Zafatah. The collaborators' militia also fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 81-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Mayfadun, Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr and areas along the Litani River from the Zafatah and Qal`ah positions.

28 April 1999

At 0600 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

At 0900 hours the client Lahad militia arrested a Habbariyah resident, Bassam Khuza`i Barakat, aged 20, and put him in Khiyam prison. At 2330 hours the same Lahad elements arrested Husayn Hani Khammasi, aged 28, and then expelled him to the liberated areas by way of Zimriya.

Between 1100 and 1130 hours Israeli warplanes overflew the South at high altitudes.

At 1205 hours the Lahad militia fired three 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Haddatha from its position at Ruways.

At 1330 hours a device exploded outside Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, seriously wounding a certain Ali Malik Isma`il.

Between 1445 and 1530 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 12 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Haddatha and Jibal al-Butm from the Tall Ya`qub and Mays al-Jabal positions.

At 1520 hours six artillery shells fired from Israeli occupation and militia positions in the occupied strip fell in the Wadi al-Asi area between Jibal al-Butm and Kafra.

Between 1620 and 1730 hours Israeli forces and the client Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at Mazra`at Uqmata, the area around Sujud, the Yuhmur lowland, the Mazra`at al-Hamra vicinity, outlying areas of Arabsalim and Zibqin and the outskirts of Jibal al-Butm from positions at Ksarat al-Urush, Zafatah, Rayhan, Shurayfah and Dahr al-Jabal. A 120-mm mortar shell fell on an occupied dwelling in Jibal al-Butm.

Between 1800 and 1900 hours occupying Israeli forces and the client militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells, 120-mm mortar shells and direct-fire rounds at Mazra`at al-Hamra and outlying areas of Yuhmur, Ghanduriyah, Burj Qallawiyah, Tulin, areas along the Tasah spring, areas of Sujud, Mazra`at Uqmata and outlying areas of Luwayzah from positions at Zafatah, Shurayfah, Ksarat al-Urush, Tayyibah and Sujud hill.

At 1922 hours Israeli warplanes attacked the eastern Luwayzah heights at a point near the Lebanese Army position.

29 April 1999

Between 0035 and 0335 hours occupying Israeli forces fired several 155-mm shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm, Zibqin, Izziyah and Mazra`at al-Hamra from the Tall Ya`qub and Shurayfah positions.

Between 0100 and 0330 hours the outskirts of Zibqin, Jibal al-Butm and Izziyah came under fire from Israeli and Lahad forces in the occupied strip.

Between 0440 and 0645 hours an Israeli gunboat offshore between the Qulaylah lowland and Bayadah fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Between 1100 and 1245 hours Israeli warplanes intermittently overflew the South, the Western Bekaa, the North and Mount Lebanon at high altitudes.

At 1305 Israeli occupation forces fired five 120-mm mortar shells at Luwayzah and Jabal Abu Rashid from their positions to the south of Ahmadiyah hill.

Between 2015 and 2100 hours Israeli forces and the Lahad militia fired several 155-mm artillery shells at the outskirts of Mayfadun and directed several bursts of fire at areas around Qal`at al-Shaqif (Château de Beaufort) from the Qal`ah and Shurayfah positions. Six 155-mm artillery shells were fired from the Jabal Balat position at outlying areas of Izziyah, Majdal Silm and Zibqin.

At 2100 hours Israeli occupation forces shelled Wadi al-Kafur, the outskirts of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Zawtar al-Gharbiyah, areas along the Zahrani River, the outskirts of Qa`qa`iyat al-Jisr and Wadi Mayfadun from their positions in the occupied strip while Israeli helicopters overflew these areas.

30 April 1999

Between 2300 and 0200 on the night of 29/30 April Israeli occupation forces and the client militia intermittently fired several 155-mm artillery shells and 120-mm mortar shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm, Izziyah, Mansuri, Majdal Zun and Zibqin from their positions on Dabshah hill and Rum hill and at Jabal Balat and Tall Ya`qub. They also fired several 81-mm mortar shells at the area around Dabshah hill itself and launched three illumination flares over the Kafr Falus installations.

Between 0100 and 0610 hours an Israeli gunboat off Mansuri intermittently launched three illumination flares over the shore and fired several bursts of medium-weapons fire in all directions.

Without giving any reasons, at 1015 hours the Lahad militia prevented four residents of Udaysah living in Beirut from crossing into the occupied zone by way of the Kafr Tibnit checkpoint.

Between 1200 and 1220 hours Israeli occupation forces fired 155-mm artillery shells and directed bursts of medium-weapons fire at outlying areas of Yatar, Mazra`at al-Hamra, Zibqin and Jibal al-Butm from positions at Tall Ya`qub, Shurayfah and Zafatah and on Dabshah hill.

Between 1635 and 2205 hours Israeli occupation forces and the client Lahad militia in positions at the Mays al-Jabal checkpoint, Tall Ya`qub, Zafatah, Aramta, Ksarat al-Urush, Qunaytirah and Rum hill shelled outlying areas of Qabrikha, Tulin, Qallawiyah, areas along the Tasah spring, Mazra`at Uqmata and the areas around Sujud hill and Rum hill.

Between 2125 and 2200 hours occupying Israeli forces positioned at Tall Ya`qub fired several 155-mm artillery shells at outlying areas of Jibal al-Butm and Shu`aytiyah.

Between 2220 and 2230 hours two Israeli helicopters flew over the sea off Sarafand.


The Lebanese Government strongly condemns the continued Israeli occupation and the fresh attacks and arbitrary practices against the Lebanese civilian population that have left a number of wounded and caused further serious damage to property.

Like previous attacks, this new series is in flagrant violation of the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon and constitutes a breach of the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, of international law and of basic human rights.
