Hunger's global hotspots: 22 July 2008

Introduction

22 July 2008 - In regions wracked by violence or submerged by floods, the first emergency is how to deliver enough food as quickly and efficiently as possible. Here are some of the crises counted among WFP's "global hotspots".

Occupied Palestinian territories
General: A mission was in oPt for ten days to look into possible scaling up of safety net interventions in light of soaring food prices. Recommendations propose that WFP go ahead with an EMOP or a B/R to put in place an emergency food support scheme, targeting 50,000 newly food-insecure non-refugees not covered by any safety net intervention. Additional interventions for this B/R or EMOP will most probably include strengthening of local mills and support to women’s groups in the preparation of snacks for school feeding.

Operational: Food distributions are ongoing throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip to 527,000 of the most vulnerable non-refugees. Re-export of the flour from Nablus is finalized. All of the 5,490 mt have been dispatched from Nablus to Haifa, for onwards shipping to Djibouti. One last vessel will leave Haifa for Djibouti on 24 July.
