UNDP signs USD 10 million agreement with Islamic Development Bank for housing in Gaza

Jerusalem, 28 October 2014 – UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Government, represented by the Prime Minister’s office, signed a USD 10 million agreement with the Islamic Development Bank to reconstruct partially damaged housing units in Gaza.

The Agreement was signed by H.E. Prime Minister Rami Al Hamdallah, Mr Jawad Naji, representing the Islamic Development Bank and UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator Mr Frode Mauring.

Non-refugee families whose homes have been partially damaged during the recent conflict will receive cash assistance to address their accommodation needs. The self-help programme, which will be implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, will include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 600 housing units over a 12-month period. Approximately 4,200 displaced people who have lost their homes as a result of the conflict will be targeted.

It is worth noting that the 51-day conflict has resulted in the death of more than 2,205 Palestinians including over 1,483 civilians. Over 18,000 housing units have been destroyed or severely damaged, leaving approximately 108,000 people homeless.

UNDP’s response to the Gaza crisis includes enhancing livelihoods through emergency employment, rubble removal, repairing essential infrastructure, restoring solid waste services and providing institutional support towards a unified civil service and institutional harmonization.
