UNRWA Opens German-Funded School in Homs Camp
The Ambassador of Germany to Syria, Dr. Andreas Reinicke, inaugurated today a new school building in Homs Camp, which was constructed and equipped through a contribution of US$ 456,100 from the German government.
The school, which is one of 119 schools run by UNRWA in Syria, will operate in two shifts, and will provide basic education for 709 students.
Referring to the donation, Karen AbuZayd, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, commented, "I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the Government of Germany for its generous contributions, which continues this important partnership with UNRWA."
"This facility is yet another demonstration of the continued firm support of the German government of Palestine refugees and UNRWA’s services to them," said Ambassador Reinicke.
"We stress anew the necessity for the Agency to continue its work and provide its services to Palestine refugees until a just and peaceful solution is found," said Ali Mustafa, Director-General of the General Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees (GAPAR), while also thanking the German government for its contribution.
Ambassador Reinicke and Ms. AbuZayd along with Mr. Mustafa toured the school and planted a number of olive trees.
UNRWA is a humanitarian and human development agency providing education, health care, social services, micro-credit and emergency relief to up to 4.6 million registered refugees living in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic. In Syria, the Agency provides assistance to over 450,000 refugees.
