At its forty-second session, the General Assembly adopted resolution 42/160 A to G of 8 December 1987 concerning the report of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the population of the Occupied Territories (A/42/650). In paragraph 20 (c) and (d) of resolution 42/160 D the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to ensure the widest circulation of the reports of the Special Committee and of information regarding its activities and findings, by all means available, through the Department of Public Information of the Secretariat and, where necessary, to reprint those reports of the Special Committee that are no longer available, and to report to the General Assembly at its forty-third session on the tasks entrusted to him in the present resolution.

2. The present report is submitted in accordance with those provisions.

3. Also in response to paragraph 20 (c) and (d) of resolution 42/160 D, the Department of Public Information of the Secretariat undertook the following activities:

(a) During the past year, the Department continued to disseminate information regarding United Nations action on the question of Palestine, which included action by the Security Council, the General Assembly, the Commission on Human Rights and the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
The information was carried to the public through regular departmental channels such as press releases, UN Radio and the UN Chronicle. The United Nations information centres around the world also engaged in providing information to the public on the subject;

(b) The Department also continued to distribute the booklet on the Special Committee on Israeli Practices (DPI 842), available in five languages. It is making preparations to revise the publication and to bring it up to date with both the Special Committee's activities and the current situation. Also an Information Officer from the Department traveled with the Special Committee on its most recent fact-finding mission through the Middle East and provided detailed press releases regarding the Committee hearings.
