YARMOUK SITUATION UPDATE 5

05 April 2015

The situation of armed conflict continues in Yarmouk today, 5 April 2015. No UNRWA humanitarian operations have been possible inside Yarmouk since the outbreak of fighting on April 1st. As hostilities continue to escalate, UNRWA remains greatly alarmed by the humanitarian consequences for the 18,000 Palestinian and Syrian men, women and children trapped in Yarmouk, facing acute dangers, unable to safely access water and food, and fearful of the outcome of current developments.

Reports of a somewhat reduction in the intensity of clashes in the morning were short-lived, as violence resumed later in the day to disturbingly high levels, bringing renewed risks and hardship to the desperate civilians of Yarmouk.

As reported yesterday, UNRWA was able to provide life-saving humanitarian support to 94 civilians, including 43 women and 20 children, who fled Yarmouk and found refuge in a nearby school. UNRWA immediately distributed canned food, water, mattresses and blankets. UNRWA and its partners stand ready to continue providing humanitarian assistance to civilians inside Yarmouk and to those who may be displaced from Yarmouk as a result of the ongoing fighting.

In the strongest possible terms, UNRWA demands from armed groups inside Yarmouk respect for and compliance with their obligations to ensure the protection of civilians. UNRWA further demands humanitarian access and the establishment of secure conditions under which the Agency can deliver life-saving humanitarian assistance and that enable civilians to be evacuated.
