Renewed violence in the Middle East two weeks after the end of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip

Statements by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson
(Paris, September 26, 2005)
The renewed violence in the Middle East, two weeks after the end of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, is disturbing.
It shows that the Palestinian Authority's control over the radical groups is inadequate. These groups proceeded to fire rockets against Israeli territory, which we condemn.
As the minister reiterated yesterday, the international community must give full support to the Palestinian Authority to help it strengthen its security capacities.
Israel has the right to defend itself, but we call on it to exercise restraint. It is essential to avoid reducing to nothing the efforts begun by the Palestinian Authority which must be sustained.
The political process launched by the withdrawal must continue. We call on the two parties to resume the implementation of the road map and to maintain Israeli-Palestinian dialogue. We hope that the scheduled meeting between Mr. Sharon and Mr. Abbas will be held.
