|STRAW STATEMENT ON SWEARING IN OF NEW PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY CABINET (29/03/06)|
The Foreign Secretary Jack Straw today made a statement on the swearing in of the new Palestinian Authority Cabinet.
'Today President Abbas has sworn in the newly appointed Cabinet of the Palestinian Authority.
'The new Cabinet now needs to recognise that with a democratic mandate comes the responsibility to govern in the best interests of the Palestinian people. This includes renouncing violence, recognising the State of Israel and accepting previous agreements reached by the Palestinian Authority, as set out by the Quartet on 30 January.
'I have previously made clear that the Palestinian people should not be punished for the decisions their new government takes. We are doing what we can to ensure that we, and the international community, can continue to provide humanitarian and development support to the Palestinian people to help them build a better future. The United Kingdom has been one of the largest bilateral donors to the Palestinian people. I want the UK to continue to deliver that aid. But the British public will need to be assured that our funding is not going to terrorists or those who support terrorism.'
