LITHUANIA UPGRADES STATUS OF GENERAL DELEGATION OF PALESTINE IN HELSINKI
On 8 March, Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevièius met with Nabil Darwish Alwazir, head of the General Delegation of Palestine in Helsinki, and handed over a note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, informing him that the status of the head of the General Delegation in Helsinki has been upgraded. He will now be designated the “Chief of the Palestinian Mission who resides in Hesinki”.
At the meeting in Vilnius, Linkevièius stressed that Lithuania had consistently spoken up in favour of a solution with two States - Israel and Palestine - living peacefully side by side.
“It is now especially important to restore confidence in the Middle East peace process and to resume peace talks as soon as possible,” the Lithuanian Foreign Minister said.
The meeting also discussed possibilities to expand bilateral cooperation, relations between the European Union and the Palestinian Authority. The interlocutors exchanged views on the situation in the region.
Finland, Latvia and Estonia have also upgraded the status of the General Delegation of Palestine. The General Delegation of Palestine will now be called the “Palestinian Mission”.
From 2011 to 2013, the status of the Palestinian diplomatic representations was also reviewed and upgraded by some other EU member states, including Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Germany, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, etc.
Lithuania and the Palestinian Authority have not established diplomatic relations.
