Turkey gives UNRWA US$ 1.1 million worth of food for the refugees of Nahr El Bared

The Government of Turkey through the Emergency Management Agency of the Prime Minister’s Office has donated food to UNRWA for distribution to refugees displaced from Nahr El Bared Camp in Northern Lebanon. The Turkish donation consists of 200 tonnes of sugar, 200 tonnes of rice, 50 tonnes of red lentils, 50 tonnes of chickpeas and 20,000 litres of olive oil. The value of this package of assistance is estimated at US$ 1.1 million.

Following the events in Nahr El Bared camp which led to the displacement of over 30,000 refugees and the damage and destruction of much of the camp infrastructure, UNRWA launched an emergency appeal to the international community for funds. A total of US$ 55 million is required to plan for the rehabilitation of the camp, provide temporary shelters, health and education services, create infrastructure necessary for the provision of water and sanitation services, and distribute food to those most affected. The Turkish contribution will greatly assist UNRWA in this regard.

UNRWA wishes to express its appreciation to the Government of Turkey for its renewed assistance to the Agency and the Palestine refugees.
