UNICEF welcomes Israeli Government’s release of 55 Palestinian child detainees
East Jerusalem, 18 December 2011 — UNICEF welcomed the release today of 55 Palestinian child detainees by the Israeli Government as part of a prisoner swap deal and said it looked forward to more progress on the issue of detained children.
“We welcome this release of children by the Israeli authorities and we look forward to further progress on the issue of child detainees,” said Jean Gough, UNICEF Special Representative in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The 55 released children are reported to be between the ages of 14 and 17. On 1 December, a total of 161 Palestinians under 18 years of age were in Israeli military detention.
