High Representative Mogherini seeks concrete steps to de-escalate
the situation of violence in the Middle East with President Mahmoud Abbas

The EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday night in Brussels, less than a month after their meeting in New York on the margin of the UN General Assembly.

Previewing the meeting in her remarks to the press, Federica Mogherini stressed the importance to focus on concrete ways that can translate into the every day life of ordinary people on the ground, while no effort must be spared to restart a true and effective political process.

"What we are looking for is steps, concrete steps on the ground, including difficult ones that can improve the life of the Palestinian people, that can strengthen the Palestinian Authority not only on the economic field but also on the security and the political field and to have some deliverables of the process itself. And on the other side, that can guarantee the security of the Israeli people."

Last week, the EU High Representative had similar talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Berlin before she met her counterparts from the Quartet in Vienna to seek ways to de-escalate the current tensions between Israelis and Palestinians and restore the calm in the region.
