THE SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Letter dated 5 February 1968 form the Secretary-General
to the charge d'affairs a.i. of Lebanon to the United Nations

I acknowledge receipt of your letter of 23 January 1968 in which, as Chairman of the Arab group for the month of January 1968, you draw my attention to certain problems relating to the treatment of Arab civilians in areas now occupied by the armed forces of Israel.

Your letter, in accordance with your request, has been circulated to the General Assembly 1/ and the Security Council 2/ and thus drawn to the attention of all of the Members of the United Nations. This reply will be similarly circulated.

I have carefully noted the information set forth in you letter as well as your expression, on behalf of the Arab group, of your confidence that I shall continue my efforts to secure the effective implementation of the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council.

I have been, and am giving very serious thought to the problems raised in your letter and will wish to consult with the representatives of all the Governments concerned with regard to the humanitarian problems involved.

          (Signed ) U THANT
          Secretary-General
