Gaza, 17 April 2012 – As part of their continuing effort to combat poverty and hunger, representatives from India, Brazil and South Africa, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRSC) signed an agreement in the amount of one million Dollars to rehabilitate the PRCS building in the Gaza Strip.

The one million Dollar project, aims at enhancing access to public health and social services for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The project consists of the rehabilitation of nine partially or totally destroyed floors to be utilized for an open heart surgery unit, patients recovery rooms, psychosocial support, hostel for local and international staff as well as a cafeteria and an administrative department. The project is expected to finish in one year and will serve patients from across the Gaza Strip.

During his speech the South African Ambassador, Mr. Mlungisi Makalima, highlighted the importance of the project to IBSA “this project is being implemented in the spirit of solidarity with the Palestinian People and most importantly because it benefits both parties. Ligia Maria Scherer, Representative of Brazil, H.E. Mlungisi Makalima, Representative of South Africa, and Mr. Frode Mauring, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator.

“The Palestinian Red Crescent Society has a vital role to play in providing healthcare and social services for the people in Gaza in a manner that protects their dignity and preserves their lives and well being”, said Frode Mauring, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator.
