SECRETARY-GENERAL'S VISIT TO JORDAN, 7 - 9 FEBRUARY

On Sunday, 7 February, the Secretary-General expressed his deep and personal grief upon learning of the death of King Hussein Ibn Talal of Jordan earlier that morning. "I will always remember his many contributions, for King Hussein was one of the United Nations' most valuable partners for peace", he said in a statement (Press Release SG/SM/6888).

On Sunday afternoon, the Secretary-General departed for Washington, D.C., where he was the guest of United States President William J. Clinton aboard the President's plane en route to Jordan.

He attended the funeral of the late King Hussein on Monday, 8 February, in Amman, Jordan, joining the many heads of State and government who were also in attendance.

He returned to the United States that evening on President Clinton's aircraft, arriving in Washington, D.C., at 2:30 a.m. on the 9th. He returned to New York later that day.
