IDENTICAL LETTERS DATED 24 MARCH 1997 FROM THE CHARGE D'AFFAIRES A.I.
OF THE PERMANENT MISSION OF ISRAEL TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED
TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL

I refer to the letters dated 27 February 1997 (S/1997/165) and 18 March 1997 (S/1997/233) from the Palestinian Permanent Observer addressed to the President of the Security Council and the Secretary-General, respectively, requesting an immediate meeting of the Security Council.

As you will be aware, these letters do not constitute valid requests for meetings of the Security Council since they were made by a representative of an organization and not a State, as required by the Charter of the United Nations and the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council.

I should be grateful if you would have the present letter circulated as a document of the Security Council.

(Signed) David PELEG
Chargé d'affaires a.i.
