WHO attends the launch of the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan, December 2016

9 December 2016, Bethlehem - WHO Head of Office in the oPt, Dr Gerald Rockenschaub and the Health Cluster attended the launch of the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) for the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) today. The event included opening remarks and statements by the Palestinian Minister of Social Development, H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Al-Shaer, and the UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities, Mr. Robert Piper.

The 2017 HRP seeks to implement 243 projects to support the humanitarian needs of 1.6 million Palestinians in the oPt. 17 of the projects will be implemented by 13 Health Cluster partners and will support 535,443 vulnerable people, mainly affected by access restrictions to health services. 13 million dollars are needed for these 17 health projects.

Access to health services remains limited for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, Area C and East Jerusalem. The health response priorities aim to address the needs of the most vulnerable groups including neonates, children under the age of five, women, and patients with chronic illnesses, the elderly and people with disabilities. Interventions will focus on providing access to quality and affordable primary health care services, strengthening emergency preparedness, coping capacity and the resilience of communities, and providing mental health support in East Jerusalem. Finally, the Health Cluster will aim to enhance advocacy for patients from the West Bank and Gaza to access referral services.

For 2017 the Health Cluster main activities are supporting mobile health clinics in Area C, establishing and strengthening of primary trauma care in East Jerusalem, provision of essential life-saving drugs, health care services to neonates and the management of chronic malnutrition in the Gaza Strip.
