Press Release
On the 38th anniversary of the arson of al-Aqsa mosque :
The secretary-general of the organization of the Islamic conference calls
on the international community to put an end to the Israeli violations
in the city of al-Quds al-Sharif

On the occasion of the 38th Anniversary of the Arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque on the 21st of August 1969, the Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, expressed the outrage and condemnation of the Muslim world at the persistent Israeli violations in the occupied Arab territories generally and, in particular, against the City of Al-Quds Al-Sharif and the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque, with Israel’s persistence in its operations of confiscation, demolition, and utter destruction of the Mosque’s Waqf endowment properties on top of Israel’s dogged insistence on carrying on with its deep excavations beneath and around Al-Aqsa, thereby seriously undermining its foundations to the very verge of collapsing
Ihsanoglu reaffirmed that, for the Arab and Muslim worlds, the City of Al-Quds and its sacred Islamic and Christian holy places represent a red line which should not be crossed under any circumstances by the Israeli occupation authorities and that all administrative and legislative measures adopted by Israel to alter the legal status of the City of Al-Quds show blatant disregard for the resolutions of the United Nations, which have invariably reaffirmed that those measures are not only illegal, but null and void, and that Israel should remove all its settlements, ring roads, and the separation wall built in the City of Al-Quds.
Ihsanoglu stressed the importance of the Arab Peace Initiative based on the land for peace formula and the establishment of the Palestinian State with sovereignty over all the territories occupied since 1967 and with Al-Quds as its capital.
Ihsanoglu urgently appealed to the international community and the United Nations to take all necessary action and measures in order to put an end to the Israeli aggression, give justice to the Palestinian people, and compel Israel to comply with the resolutions of international legitimacy so as to restore peace and security in Palestine and in all the countries of the region.
