Deputy Secretary-General Petko Draganov said the three-year programme, part of the UN Chief Executives Board cluster on trade and productive capacity, has three main goals:
· To enhance the institutional capacity of Palestinian economic institutions at the governmental and business levels.
· To strike a balance between traditional UN assistance focusing on humanitarian needs and assistance and the long-term strategic development objectives of the Palestinian economy.
In addition to UNCTAD, other participating agencies are the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Trade Centre (ITC), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Labour Office (ILO). Following the Deputy Secretary-General's presentation, several speakers outlined the projects to be carried out by the participating agencies.
Also at the meeting, the representatives of Belgium, speaking on behalf of the European Union, and the Palestinian Authority expressed their support for the initiative.
