UNRWA’s health department organised a festival on diabetes and hypertension awareness in the Arroub Basic School for Girls today. The festival was a joint effort between UNRWA, the local popular committee, and the Diabetes Friends Society (DFS) in Bethlehem.

In his statement, the chief of UNRWA’s West Bank health department Dr Khamash, stressed the importance of diabetes prevention, especially in view of the alarming increase in the rate of children and adults struck by this chronic disease. Omar Sobeh, from the DFS, added: “The society treats a high number of cases especially children, and we are proud of our achievement so far.”

During the ceremony, certificates were awarded to the diabetic patients who have attended a training course on the disease. The course provided them with scientific facts, enhanced their skills on how to live with diabetes, and on the best measures adopted to lead a long and healthy life.

Through its health programme, UNRWA offers hypertension and diabetes care in all its 42 primary health care facilities across the West Bank, where more than 400,000 patients come for consultation ever year. It also organises workshops and activities for raising awareness of this disease.
