Declaration of the Presidency of the European Union on the suicide attack in Gaza

The Presidency of the European Union condemns without reservation the suicide attack carried out last night at the Karni crossing point in the Gaza Strip, claimed by three Palestinian armed groups and killing at least six people and wounding several others. It conveys its sincere condolences to the Israeli government and the families of the victims.

The attack intervened at a time when there is real hope for relaunching the political process. The Presidency calls upon the parties to ensure that such terrorist acts do not sabotage the efforts for a negotiated, just and lasting peace, and to show restraint.

The Presidency urges the Palestinian authorities to do all they can to prevent such acts in the future. It is imperative to put an end to attacks and violence.

The European Union will continue to support all those who aspire to peace and security.  It will work with determination towards the achievement of this objective, both with the concerned parties in the region and within the Quartet.
