Ban discusses Middle East developments with top Russian official

22 September 2010 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has met with Russia’s Foreign Minister to discuss the situation in the Middle East and other international crises and hot spots, including Afghanistan, Sudan, Kosovo and Kyrgyzstan.

Mr. Ban and Sergey Lavrov met yesterday at United Nations Headquarters in New York following the earlier meeting of the Middle East Quartet, in which the two men – representing the UN and Russia – were joined by top officials from the European Union and the United States to discuss the latest developments between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Quartet also met yesterday with the foreign ministers of the League of Arab States.

Yesterday’s tête-à-tête between Mr. Ban and Mr. Lavrov was one of numerous bilateral meetings taking place on the margins of a high-level summit of the General Assembly to review progress on its global anti-poverty targets, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
