9 April 2005
PRESS RELEASE
Statement issued by H.E. Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu,
Secretary General of the organization of the Islamic conference on :
THE THREATS OF JEWISH RADICAL GROUPS TO INVADE THE BLESSED AL AQSA MOSQUE
Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference is following with deep concern the threats issued by radical Jewish groups to occupy the blessed Al Aqsa Mosque and to cause damage to it. The Secretary General affirmed that the matter is of extreme seriousness and that, if carried through, it would raise unprecedented anger and outrage among hundreds of millions of Muslims across the world, not to mention the fact that it would spark off a wave of extremism which would have direct devastating repercussions to the detriment of world peace, and that, in this respect, the responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of the Israeli government.
The Secretary General added that such acts would undermine the peace efforts, drag the whole region into a circle of fresh violence, and abort all the regional and international efforts aimed at calming the atmosphere for the peace process to resume and forge ahead.
The Secretary General exhorted the international community, international organizations, the permanent members of the Security Council and the parties to the Quartet to act immediately to prevent such aggressions and to alert the Israeli authorities to the grave responsibility of neglecting to deal with the matter properly.
