Secretary-General leaves this week on trip to Spain and Middle East

7 March 2005 United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will deliver the keynote address on a global strategy for fighting terrorism to the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security on Thursday in Madrid, Spain, during an overseas trip that will also take him to the Palestinian territories and Israel.

The summit, organized by the Club de Madrid, is being held under the patronage of King Juan Carlos of Spain. On Wednesday Mr. Annan will meet with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. On Friday he will join the King, Mr. Zapatero and visiting Heads of State and government at commemorations marking the first anniversary of the Madrid terrorist train bombings.

The Secretary-General will then travel to the Middle East, where on Monday he will meet with senior Palestinian leaders, including President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei, in Ramallah. While in the occupied Palestinian territory he will meet with staff from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) at a women’s training centre run by the agency.

On Tuesday he will begin an official visit to Israel where he is scheduled to have discussions with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Vice-Prime Minister Shimon Peres, among others.

Mr. Annan and his wife, Nane, will also attend the inauguration of the new Holocaust History museum in Jerusalem at Yad Vashem.
