Permanent Representative of
Japan to the United Nations
Statement dated 7 November 1989 by a spokesman of the Foreign
Ministry of Japan on the situation in Lebanon
The Government of Japan welcomes the news that the charter of national reconciliation has been adopted and that Mr. Rene Mouawad has been elected as President of the Republic at the session of the Lebanese Parliament held at Qlaiaat.
The Government of Japan once again pays high tribute to the continuous efforts made by the Tripartite Supreme Arab Committee, the Lebanese parliamentarians and all those concerned toward normalizing the situation in Lebanon.
The Government of Japan strongly hopes that the people of Lebanon, under their new President, and on the basis of the adopted charter of national reconciliation, will end the turmoil that has continued for 14 years, and will achieve unity and peace in Lebanon.
