Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Bot, speaking as President of the Council of Ministers of the European Union, expressed his great shock and dismay at the terrorist attack on two buses in the Israeli city of Beersheba on 31 August, which claimed the lives of many innocent civilians and wounded dozens of others. Minister Bot offered his sincere condolences to the families of the victims, the Israeli government and the Israeli people. He emphasised that the European Union fully and unconditionally rejects all forms of terrorism.
Minister Bot reiterated that the rejectionist forces must not be allowed to derail the quest for a peaceful settlement of the Middle East conflict. He once again called upon the Palestinian Authority not only to condemn those attacks, but also to take firm action against the planners of these kinds of atrocities. Minister Bot underlined that the only way to achieve a durable peace in the Middle East is through the resumption of security cooperation and direct negotiations between the parties.
