UNRWA TO SEND EMERGENCY AID FOR PALESTINE REFUGEES IN LEBANON

VIENNA, 8 June (UNRWA) -- Commissioner-General Olof Rydbeck of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) decided today to have emergency supplies airfreighted to Beirut to help meet the immediate needs of Palestine refugees affected by the fighting in south Lebanon.

Initial shipments of 50,000 blankets, 216,000 tins of corned beef and 30,000 bars of soap will be airfreighted from Denmark, France and the Federal Republic of Germany to Beirut when the airport reopens.

UNRWA's food stocks in Lebanon (about 940 tons of flour, 1,000 tons of rice, 770 tons of sugar and 220 tons of butter oil) will be made available to refugees immediately.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has already offered a cash contribution towards relief supplies and the offer has been accepted.

Initial emergency relief is expected to cost UNRWA about $1,500,000. Further requirements will be announced when the situation in Lebanon has been clarified.
