European Parliament calls for release of kidnapped Israeli soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser

In a resolution adopted today on the Middle East, the European Parliament called on Israelis and Palestinians to take a series of measures to revive efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority based on the existence of two democratic, sovereign and viable states.

In its resolution, Parliament also calls for a sign of life from the two abducted Israeli soldiers, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, to be given by their kidnappers and calls for their immediate release.

The President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, had this to say:

“We are all fervently hoping, together with the families of the kidnapped soldiers, that they can soon return unharmed to their loved ones. I met the Regev and Goldwasser families both on my visit to Tel Aviv on 27 May and on Monday in Strasbourg. They have our full support in their desire to see their sons, husbands and brothers released as soon as possible.”

In a letter of 4 July 2007, Hans-Gert Pöttering informed Nabih Berry, President of the Lebanese Parliament, about his meeting with the families of the two Israeli soldiers abducted in Lebanon and called on him to do everything in his power to secure the release of the soldiers by their kidnappers.
