Egyptian contacts with international Quartet for halting Israeli-Palestinian clashes

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit on Wednesday 25/4/2007 sent messages to his counterparts in the US, Russia and Germany plus UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and EU foreign policy Chief Javier Solana in which he denounced the ongoing Israeli military operations in the Palestinian lands.

The US, Russia, the EU (represented by Germany which is the European bloc's current chair) and the UN compose together the International Quartet on the Middle East.

The Egyptian top diplomat expressed astonishment over the timing of the Israeli escalation, which come while the world community is intensively engaged in efforts to revive the Middle East peace process.

The timing is bizarre when talks are going on to revive the   peace process and at a time when regular meetings have started between the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Israeli Pime Minister Ehud Olmert to bting views closer and consider the political horizen.

Conditions in the Palestinian territories are very harsh, the Egyptian top diplomat said in his messages, noting that the Israeli operations provoked Palestinian factions to carry out counter attacks.

This happens as Palestinians are working hard to put their house in order, which, according to Abul-Gheit, is needed to achieve stability and, thus, tone down possible Palestinian-Israeli collisions.

The Egyptian FM also called on international parties concerned, atop of which is the international quartet, to exert utmost efforts to prevent any further complications and to pressurize Israel to immediately stop those operations and stick to the truce.

Moreover, an Egyptian security delegation has urged Israel to exercise self-restraint and refrain from any military action against the Gaza Strip - a matter ehich will result in dangerous consequences and great life and material losses and  deteriorate the sufferings of the Palestinian People.
