UNCTAD has launched, in cooperation with the Palestinian Shippers' Council (PSC), the Capacity Development Project for Facilitating Palestinian Trade, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.
The PSC was established in 2008 under another project implemented by UNCTAD. The new initiative seeks to ensure its long-term sustainability, while educating Palestinian exporters and importers about internationally recognized best practices on trade facilitation.
The project will strengthen Palestinian institutions to provide continuous expert training and advisory services to shippers and policy makers in all areas of trade facilitation. It will also address the complex logistical problems of trade that have inflated the transaction cost and thereby undermined domestic enterprises. Finally, the project aims to improve the competitiveness of the Palestinian private sector and enhance the overall performance of the Palestinian economy.
The launching ceremony was held in Ramallah, on 28 November 2011, and was attended by Mr. Abdel-Hafiz Nofal , Palestinian Deputy Minister of National Economy, Ms. Maha Abu Shusheh, Chairperson of the PSC, Mr. Mahmoud Elkhafif, UNCTAD's Coordinator of Assistance to the Palestinian People, representatives from CIDA, the Palestinian private sector and the media.
