met with Terje ROED-LARSEN

UNSG Special Envoy for Lebanon

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with the United Nations Secretary-General Special Envoy for the Implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559 on Lebanon, Terje ROED-LARSEN.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the country and to discuss the UN Security Council demand for a Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon.

The High Representative expressed the EU's full support for the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559 and the role of the UNSG Special Envoy, Mr Terje Roed-Larsen. He informed about the EU's regular contacts with the different parties and underlined the need to consolidate Lebanon's democracy, independence and sovereignty. The High Representative welcomed recent announcements but underscored the necessity to implement these commitments on the ground.

Mr Roed-Larsen informed about the role of the United Nations and briefed Mr Solana on his upcoming trip to the region. A review of Resolution 1559 is foreseen for mid-April and will provide a good opportunity for the UN Security Council to take stock of the developments in Lebanon.
